Wellington - The decision by New Zealand's largest Sikh temple to hail as martyrs the three men who assassinated Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi has upset some members of the Indian community in Auckland.
The temple in Manukau has hung on its walls portraits of Gandhi's bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who were killed in a gun battle after firing more than 30 bullets into her in 1984, and of co-conspirator Kehar Singh, who was sentenced to death, the Weekend Herald reported Saturday.
Entitled 'Shaheed Bhai' - or martyr brother - they hang alongside others who have been killed for their Sikh beliefs.
The newspaper described how the pictures had divided the Sikh community and upset other Indians in New Zealand's largest city, which has the country's largest Asian population.
'If someone wants to honour a terrorist, that's an individual choice,' Veer Khar, general secretary of the New Zealand Indian Central Association, told the paper.
'But to put them up in a public place, as a community we totally condemn such an activity.'
He acknowledged that atrocities were committed against the Sikh community prior to Mrs Gandhi's assassination, but said honouring the men who killed her was creating unnecessary tension.
'We sympathise with the pain, we don't deny that those things happened,' he said. 'We want to say that we have to move on in life.'
However, Ranvir Lali Singh, a Sikh who has been involved with the temple for 15 years, told the paper that anyone who died for the religion was considered a martyr.
'We don't consider those who killed Indira Gandhi as terrorists, they are our martyrs,' he said. 'She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards as revenge for her attack on the Golden Temple, our holiest shrine, and for that, we consider them our martyrs. There is nothing wrong.'
A spokesman for India's senior diplomat in New Zealand, High Commissioner Sureesh Mehta, acknowledged the issue was 'sensitive,' but declined further comment.

The sikh people here where I live in New Jersey still have somewhat of a connection to Khalistan.

In my school, we have a giant wall full of flags of countries from around the world, one of those flags represent Khalistan due to the huge population of Sikh people in my school. Also hear it now and then when they have some kind of cultural or religious festival.

The movement itself may be dead but it still lives on in the hearts of the people

Kidnapped Sikh beheaded in Tirah valley

LANDI KOTAL: Militants have beheaded a kidnapped Sikh in Tirah valley of Khyber Agency after his relatives failed to pay ransom, according to his family.

Jaspal Singh and two other Sikhs were kidnapped from the Chora Tanga area of Tirah two weeks ago.

According to the family, the kidnappers had demanded Rs20 million by Feb 20 for Mr Jaspal’s release.

Sources said that a jirga of some local elders and relatives of the kidnapped Sikhs went to Tirah on Saturday in order to negotiate the release of the hostages, but the captors instead handed them over the beheaded body of Jaspal on Sunday. The two other Sikhs are still in captivity. — Ibrahim Shinwari.

Taliban kills Sikhs; India seeks justice from Pak


New Delhi: The Pakistan Taliban’s beheading of two Sikhs was most "most barbaric" and may be discussed during the two countries’ talks on February 25, said External Affairs Minister S M Krishna on Monday.

''Pakistan must ensure the safety of minorities,'' said Krishna while commenting on the murders of the Sikhs in Khyber and Orakzi areas near Peshawar of Pakistan. The issue is likely to come up at the India-Pakistan Foreign Secretary-level talks scheduled for February 25.

"We are in touch with the Indian High Commission in Islamabad and are looking into the matter. We will bring up the issue with Pakistan," Krishna told reporters outside Parliament.

The two men were kidnapped in separate incidents for ransom by gunmen of the Tehrik-e-Talibanat and were killed, local reports said. Two other Sikhs are still in the custody of the terrorists.

IANS reports the Taliban had beheaded one Sikh businessman, who was identified as Jaspal Singh. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), a Sikh organisation that manages gurdwaras, the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have condemned the killing of Jaspal Singh by suspected Taliban militants in Pakistan.

The victim was kidnapped along with two other Sikhs by Taliban militants from Tirah valley in Khyber Agency near the provincial capital Peshawar.

A letter was found with the body warning the relatives of the deceased and other Sikh locals against disclosing the case to the media. His two other companions, Gorwandar Singh and Surjeet Singh, are still being held captive by the militants, according to media reports.

"This is a condemnable act. The central government should take up the matter with the Pakistan government to ensure the safety of Sikhs in that area," said SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar.

The government in Punjab has sought the central government's intervention to ensure the safety of Sikhs in the restive tribal region in Pakistan.

"The government should not sleep in this matter. Life of Sikhs should be protected," Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said in Chandigarh.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said that India needs to talk to Pakistan over the incident.

"It is a serious issue and there is a need to talk to Pakistan. It also sends a message to world powers who are trying to differentiate between good and bad Taliban," Tewari told reporters in Delhi.

He said the government had been regularly taking up the issue of providing security to minorities, especially Sikhs, in Pakistan.

The BJP has asked the government to mount "diplomatic pressure" on Pakistan to ensure release of the abducted Sikh residents in that country.

Minorities are facing threats in Pakistan and terrorism presents the real picture of that country, said BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad.

A large number of Pakistani Sikhs have fled from Orakzai and Tirah valley where the non-Muslims have been charged "jazia" or tax by militants on the pretext of providing security to them in the area.
