BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia addresses the combined opposition grand rally in front of the party’s Nayapaltan headquarters on Tuesday afternoon to announce the next course of action in their anti-government movement.
Her motorcade reached the venue around 3:15 pm amid cheering by thousands of party leaders and activists who also chanted slogans in favour of Khaleda carrying sheaf of paddy, the election symbol of the main opposition party.
She greeted supporters waving hand from the dais.
She was scheduled to start delivering her speech before 5pm. Her speech may continue till evening.
Press secretary to the BNP chief Maruf Kamal Khan Sohel told banglanews, “Madam (Khaleda) will start delivering her speech at 4.30pm or 4.45pm and may continue till 6pm or Magrib Azan.”
The rally venue had already turned into a human sea two hours before its scheduled start at 2pm.
With City BNP coordinator and Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) Mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka in the chair the rally has begun with the speech of Islami Chhatra Shibir President Dr Fakhruddin Manik.
“Today’s human sea proves that the ruling government has detached from the people,” Manik added.

Earlier city streets get clogged as protesters started converging on the heart of the capital where the BNP-led opposition is about to stage a grand rally on Tuesday afternoon.
Spot reports say thousands of leaders and activists of opposition BNP and its associate bodies began thronging the Nayapaltan to stage their much-orchestrated grand rally at the changed venue in front of the party’s headquarters to demand parliamentary elections under a restored nonpartisan caretaker government.
Strong contingents of police and paramilitary RAB personnel have been deployed in the area to maintain order during the combined opposition showdown on their demands that include a lot many others than snap polls under caretaker government.
Elite-force RAB conducted a sweep of the rally venue and surroundings with the dog squad at around 12noon, ahead of the rally, being held in the wake of a latest government-opposition standoff.
Leaders and activists of wards no 38, 39 and 40 units of Chhatra Dal joined the rally with processions, as others from within and outside the capital were on the beeline.
The stage of the rally has been set in front of VIP Tower Bhavan, opposite to the BNP central office.
BNP will webcast the rally on their party website BNP Live Broadcast.
On September 18, the BNP-led four-party alliance announced that they would hold a grand rally at the historic Paltan Maidan on September 27 to announce their movement programme.
On September 22, the main opposition party and its allies enforced a nationwide hartal in protest against a recent hike in fuel prices and what they described as repression on their leaders and activists.
The same day, the government authorities eventually refused the BNP-led four-party alliance permission for holding their grand rally on September 27 at the historic Paltan Maidan aimed at launching a greater movement for election under a reinstated caretaker government.
