Dhaka, Oct 16 (UNB) Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday assured BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, now in Beijing, of Chinas continued support to Bangladesh in its economic and infrastructural development.
He gave the assurance during a meeting with Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, according to a message received here.
In response to Khaledas request for furthering Chinese technical and economic cooperation for Bangladesh, Yang assured her that China considers Bangladesh a special friend and hence Chinese assistance in various fields would continue in the future.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said the areas of cooperation could be infrastructure development like building bridges, roads and railways, and the energy sector, river training and flood control.
He also conveyed his governments willingness to consider Chinas participation in the construction of a deep sea port in the Bay of Bengal.
Yang also assured the continuation of Chinas assistance in modernising the Bangladesh Armed Forces.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also highly appreciated Khaledas contributions towards consolidating Sino-Bangladesh relations ever since they were established by President Ziaur Rahman.
Khaleda expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Bangladesh for the assurances given by the Foreign Minister, which she described as a reflection of the depth of China Bangladesh relations.
She also appreciated Chinas policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of others and for maintaining peaceful coexistence.
Both sides agreed on the importance of peace and stability in the region and for seeking negotiated settlement of all outstanding issues for the welfare of the people. They were also strongly opposed to terrorism and separatist activities.
The BNP leader wished the upcoming 18th Congress of the CPC all success. Khaleda invited the Chinese Foreign Minister to visit Bangladesh.
The two leaders reiterated the ties between the CPC and BNP and Minister Yang believed that Khaledas current visit will further strengthen the friendly relations between the people of the two countries.
BNP standing committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, and Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, vice-chairmen Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, and Selima Rahman, chairpersons adviser Sabihuddin Ahmed, press secretary Maruf Kalam Khan Sohel, private secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed and special assistant Shimul Biswas other delegation members accompanied the opposition leader during the meeting.
High officials of the Chinese Foreign Ministry assisted the Foreign Minister at the talks.
In the afternoon, a BNP delegation, headed by its Standing Committee member and former Minister D Khandker Mosharaff Hossain, visited a special training and rehabilitation centre for destitute women in Beijing.
Besides, BNP Standing Committee member and former Army Chief Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman paid a courtesy call on Deputy Chief of the Peoples Liberation Army.
The BNP Chairperson went to China on Monday at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Last night, she attended a banquet meeting with the Head of the International Department and Minister in charge of International Affairs of the CPC.
