Its very unfortunate that our Muslim brothers are also falling victim of extremism as rightly pointed out by @Shaagird and @jamahir
Perhaps due to reaction of Islamophobia created by Western countries and some loonies like sadhvi prachi and other Hindu mullahs

if you ask your muslim acquaintances to show their family photographs from the 80's and 90's, you will generally see no burqa and kurta-pyjama-cap.

the change in indian muslims towards reactionary attitudes began in a small way in 1989 when two events occurred - advani's "rath yatra" and khomeini's death fatwa against salman rushdie... these allowed the formerly side-lined reactionaries among muslims to push muslims into defensive mentality and the muslims being in a indian context with all its regressive culture copied that regressiveness.

even so, there still were progressive muslims in the 90's who spoke of saddam hussain as hero... but in the 2000's began a radical change when taliban and osama bin laden became heroes and this of course coincided with the mass appearance of the burqa.

at present, the younger muslims in teens and twenties are more "religious" than the older ones... now this cannot be attributed to islamophobia in the west since 2001 because india was never a country/culture where the ordinary people were aware of global events... if the western governments pushed at muslims, the general indian muslim could have pushed back using socialism/progressiveism but that didn't happen because indian society on the whole is not evolved and educated.

the hindu mullahs crowing in full force since may 2014 exist because india's culture allows them to.

so what india needs is a social transformation, and that can be begun by talking of abolishing of religion-based parliamentary parties like aimim and bjp.
