Google: Kerala overtakes Taj Mahal as most searched travel destination

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has edged out the Taj Mahal to become the number one in Google's search trends for travel destinations in the country for 2012.

Munnar, a popular tourist destination in the state, is also on the list of Top 10 Indian destinations on Google's Zeitgeist site, showing search trends from around the world.

Kerala at number one and the Taj Mahal at number two were followed by the Wagah Border (Punjab), Vaishno Devi and Amarnath (both in Jammu and Kashmir).

Kashmir came number six on the list of top ten travel destinations under the Google search trends for 2012.

According to search trends in the travel category released by Google for this year, Munnar was number nine, followed by the Gateway of India (Mumbai).

Kerala tourism minister AP Anil Kumar described the two listings for Kerala, including the number one spot, as a great encouragement for the state.

"Kerala Tourism is a leader in online promotional activities for the state. We are one of the first government establishments to make use of the internet to reach out to the world," he said.

Google's Zietgeist, which covers all search categories, answers the question of what the world searched for in a particular year.

Brotherhood helps Kovalam lure Russians:tup:

Thiruvananthapuram: The rise of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt seems to have revived Kovalam’s fortunes as a beach destination. The Brotherhood’s ‘talibanistic’ stand against shorts and bikinis on Egypt’s beaches have prompted tourists in Yekaterinburg, the fourth largest city in Russia, to opt for Kovalam over popular Egyptian beach resorts. Bigger Russian cities like Moscow and St Petersburg are expected to take Yekaterinburg’s holiday route in future.

It was Mohamed Saad alKatatny, secretary general of the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, who had said that conservative dress codes must be enforced on Egyptian beaches. “The charter from Yekaterinburg normally flies to Egypt between November and April. Last year, after the statement by the Brotherhood, Pegas Touristik decided to fly to Kovalam instead”, said Alla Tatiana, a Russian tour operator.

The charter from Yekaterinburg, which had been arriving in the capital every 13 days, has already made six trips to Kovalam. “The numbers has been increasing with each flight. The first flight had only 120 tourists. The last one had 180”, said Prasad Manjali, vice president of Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel. At least 10,000 Russian tourists are expected to arrive during the period, the highest ever in the history of Kovalam,” he said.
