Centre accepts Keralas high speed rail corridor project

TRIVANDRUM: The Indian Railways has expressed interest in taking up Indias first high-speed railway corridor project linking the Kerala capital to Managalore in the neighbouring Karnataka state for trains that can run more than 300 kilometres/hour, sources from Kerala government said.
The expression of interest came from Vinay Mittal, chairman of Railway Board, at the high-level meeting called by Prime Minister Manmohan Singhs office in New Delhi on Friday at the instance of the Kerala government, which was attended by top officials.
They said they were interested in the project since it was the first high-speed rail corridor in India. The Railway Board has been asked for approaching the federal cabinet, said P. Prabhakaran, chief secretary of Kerala, who attended the meeting, chaired by Pulok Chatterjee, principal secretary to the PM.
The North-South High Speed Rail Corridor (HSRC), which is expected to develop as the economic lifeline of Kerala, was originally planned as a PPP (public-private partnership) project.
However, there was a consensus at the meeting that it could be built as a joint venture between the state and the centre with the Japanese funding.
E. Sreedharan, former chairman of the Delhi Metro Development Corporation (DMRC), which conducted a feasibility study, felt that the project would require federal viability gap funding to make it possible.
The DMRC has been asked to submit a detailed project report in six months.
As a member of Kerala Planning Board, the Metro Man now advises the state government on both the high-speed corridor and Kochi Metro in the states port city.
There was a suggestion for incorporating a special purpose vehicle between the state and centre and go for government funding. But this has not been finalised, said T. Balakrishnan, chairman and managing director of the Kerala High-Speed Rail Corporation.
The estimated project cost, for the 1st Phase from Trivandrum to Kochi, with a route length of 194 kilometres, is Rs433billion. Work on the project is expected to commence in 2013 and would be completed over the next seven-year period.

Kerala will get its first seaplane in September
KOCHI: For the first time in the state, Kochi will launch a seaplane service, as the state government has decided to introduce this facility in September this year as part of the Emerging Kerala Global Connect Programme. The announcement was made by chief minister Oommen Chandy in Kochi on Saturday.
Chandy was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the water transport terminal and office complex of Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA), which will come up on the Goshree-Chatiath Road.
The first seaplane service would begin during the global connect programme, which is slated to be held in September. Once introduced, the service is expected to boost water tourism in the state. Immediate measures would be taken to identify the area needed for this project, he said.
He also added that a meeting with the prime minister's advisor Sam Pitroda, for discussing development plans for Kerala, has been scheduled on May 28 at Thiruvananthapuram. The development plans for Kerala would be discussed with him.
The construction work of GIDA's three-storeyed complex commenced on Saturday. , would have a water service terminal office and a conference hall.
Soon after completion, GIDA would move to the new building from the revenue tower complex where it is housed at present.
"The development processs , which will see new roads and bridges connecting the islands, will need efficient transportation system. GIDA will utilize the inland water resource available and introduce modern and fast boats that provide residents cheap and safe transport. It has already procured the necessary clearance from Cochin Port and Kochi corporation," said GIDA chairman P I Sheik Pareeth.
The tender proceedings of the Rs 6.33-crore project was completed by Kitco and according to GIDA officials Aluva FIT would initiate the project. It is slated to be completed within a year.

In 2005, as part of the family get together, we decided to make a week trip to Kerala.
We started with Thekkadi
Thekkadi
But we saw only an Iguana though we thoroughly enjoyed the place.
Travelled to Alleppey and spent 3 days - rented a boat instead of house boat for a day.
Again thoroughly enjoyed the stay in Alleppey - explored backwaters, beach, had toddy and karimeen. Our only family picture with everyone in it was shot with the backwaters in the background - pleasant memories.
And went to Munnar and stayed there for a few days before concluding our family get together.
Beautiful place - Kerala is and aptly called God's own country and I have pleasant memories as that was our last get together with my father.
