It's always about politics: Here's why Karnataka is raging over govt's plans to celebrate Tipu Sultan Jayanti

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah. PTI
by: MA Deviah Nov 10, 2015
The Karnataka government's decision to celebrate 10 November as Tipu Jayanti flies in the face of history and has deeply offended the people of Coorg, Mangalore, and parts of Kerala who regard Tipu Sultan as a tyrant who destroyed temples, killed non-Muslims, and forcibly converted tens of thousands of conquered people. Various parties and organisations have already taken out protest processions and 10 November, is being observed across Coorg district as a black day.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has dismissed the protests as a conspiracy by communal forces. The BJP and Hindu organisations, though not leading the protests, have seen an opportunity here. But, the fact is that most Coorgs are hurt and offended by the Karnataka government's decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi. "He was a treacherous tyrant," says CP Belliappa, Coorg-based writer of historical books such as Victoria Gowramma, the story of a Coorg princess adopted by Queen Victoria.
Coorg was a direct recipient of Tipu's tyranny. His occupation of the district, those days ruled by the Haleri dynasty, was marked with destruction of temples, killing of what Tipu called infidels, and mass conversions. According to Belliappa, Tipu, then at war with the Coorgs, said he would cease hostilities and suggested that the Coorgs come to a place near Bagamandala, near the birthplace of the River Cauvery, to discuss terms of peace. That was a trap. The Coorgs, when they arrived, were ambushed, rounded up, and taken away to Srirangapatna. There, they were circumcised and forced to eat beef.

Evidence of Tipu's deeds in Coorg comes from within his own court. Tipu's biographer and courtier Mir Hussein Kirmani wrote about Tipu's exploits in Coorg in his The History of Tipu Sultan, "The conquering Sultan dispatched his Amirs and Khans with large bodies of troops to punish those idolaters and reduce the whole country (Coorg) to subjection. They attacked and destroyed many towns. Eight thousand men, women, and children were taken as prisoners. They were collected in an immense crowd like a flock of sheep or herd of bullocks."

In a letter to the Nawab of Kurnool, Tipu claims he took 40,000 Coorgs as prisoners and forcibly converted them to Islam and incorporated them into his Ahmadi corps. Many of the descendants of Tipu's converted Coorgs still retain their original Coorg family names.

Tipu also went about destroying temples in Coorg. To protect the Omkareshwara temple in Mercara, residents of the town knocked down its towers and replaced them with domes. The temple retains the domes even today, striking testimony that has survived over the ages. According to the Mysore Gazetteer of the time, when Tipu was finally vanquished, only two temples in his kingdom performed daily pujas. The Gazetteer estimates that Tipu destroyed around eight thousand temples in South India.

Tipu did on occasion display a benign attitude to his Hindu subjects. For instance, a temple at Sringeri was a beneficiary of his largesse. This cannot be disputed. He also fought a couple of wars with the British, for which politicians, more than historians, place him in the league of freedom fighters. A rather fanciful novel by Bhagavan Gidwani and a dramatic play by Girish Karnad, based on Gidwani's book, help add to the narrative.

But these are fiction, according to Sandeep Balakrishnan, author of the definitive work titled Tipu Sultan, The Tyrant of Mysore. Balakrishnan says in a recent article that the gifts to Sringeri Mutt were meant to placate Hindus, who he feared would rise against him. It came at a time when Tipu had been drubbed during the Third Anglo-Mysore war of 1791. With the Marathas gaining in strength, the last thing he needed was to upset the Hindu majority among his subjects. Similarly, while he fought the British, he aligned himself with the French, whose Indian aspirations matched the British in greed and ruthlessness.

If Tipu's actions in Coorg were questionable, his actions in Malabar were said to be worse. Portuguese missionary Father Bartholomew wrote in his book, Voyage to East Indies, "Women and children were hanged in Calicut, first mothers were hanged and their children tied to necks of mothers. That barbarian Tipu Sultan tied naked Christians and Hindus to the legs of elephants and made the elephants to move around till the bodies of the helpless victims were torn to pieces." After the pillage of Calicut, Tipu wrote to his generals: "Almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. Only on the borders of Cochin State a few are still not converted. I am determined to convert them also very soon. I consider this as Jihad to achieve that object."

Back in his capital Srirangapatna, a few kilometres east of Mysore, Tipu made far-reaching changes to how his kingdom functioned. For instance, he changed the official language from Kannada to Farsi; he renamed cities and towns that had Hindu names; he changed weights and distance measurement to an Arabic system; he changed the calendar, reducing the year to 364 days, and even gave new names for the shorter months, Hindu courtiers, with one notable exception, were replaced. He also exempted Muslims from paying taxes. He reversed a decision by his father Hyder Ali not to levy taxes on temples.

The Coorgs helped end Tipu's rule. According to Belliappa, the Coorgs wanted revenge and were ready to fight against Tipu. The British did not accept their services. While the Coorgs were ferocious on the battlefield, they lacked the discipline and training that the British needed in their armies. But the Coorg king and his subjects allowed the small kingdom to be used as a path for the English frontlines to be supplied. They protected the road and drove the bullock carts themselves.

Around 2,000 letters were discovered after Tipu's death in 1799, written in his own handwriting. In them, Tipu frequently calls Hindus kaffirs and infidels. He also refers to Christians, mainly the British, who need to be cleansed or converted if Islam is to be established in India. So, when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah makes the astonishing claim that Tipu Sultan was a secular ruler and a model king, he ignores the huge array of historical evidence that says the opposite. But then, Tipu Jayanthi was never really about celebrating history. Says BJP, state media-in-charge Prakash Sesharagavachar, "The need to celebrate Tipu Jayanthi is political motivated. It is not supported by historical fact, which clearly paints Tipu as a tyrannical ruler."

It's always about politics.

It is the result of Congress brainwashing, that Tipu was shown as a secular and patriotic leader in the utterly fanciful 'Sword of Tipu sultan' on DD. Many temples in South Kanara and Malabar bear the mark of Tipu's doings.

The Tyrant Diaries
From the memoirs of a French adventurer who served at Tipu’s court
FRANCOIS GAUTIER

In December 8, 1988, an old trunk was discovered in the attic of the house of Elaine de la Taille Tretinville, who died at 91 in her 14th arrondissement flat in Paris. She was a descendant of the family of Les Ripaud Montaudeverts. Among the contents was a manuscript in the hand of the most famous of the Montaudeverts—Francois Fidele Ripaud de Montaudevert. It starts with these words (in old French): “I, Francois Ripaud, am old today, but I want to tell you the true story of Tipu Sultan.”

Born in Saffre, northwestern France, in a middle-class family, Ripaud enrolled as a sailor, aged 11, on the Le Palmier. After many adventures, he settled in Mauritius, where he married and had two children. In 1797, hearing of Le Grand Tipu Sultan, he sailed from Mauritius (then called Ile de France) to Mangalore and sought a meeting with the sultan, promising “to raise a large force in Mauritius and put it at Tipu’s disposal”. Tipu, who had an early connection with the French, having been instructed in warfare by French officers in the employ of his father, jumped at the idea and gave Ripaud letters of credential. On August 19, 1798, Ripaud came back to Mauritius and made a proclamation seeking volunteers for an “expedition to travel to Mysore to assist Tipu in his resistance to British encroachment in south India”. It must be noted that, two months earlier, Napoleon had invaded Egypt and dreamt of establishing a junction with India against the British, so the governor of Mauritius received instructions to collaborate and Ripaud was able to sail to Mangalore with a shipload of French soldiers who were welcomed there like heroes.

Life at Tipu’s court was a dream for our hardy adventurer, but he began to have some misgivings. In his diary entry of January 14, 1799, he writes: “I’m disturbed by Tipu Sultan’s treatment of these most gentle souls, the Hindus. During the siege of Mangalore, Tipu’s soldiers daily exposed the heads of many innocent Brahmins within sight from the fort for the Zamorin and his Hindu followers to see.” Even so, he cast his doubts aside and put up for Tipu’s benefit a demonstration of the egalitarian political ideas of France: in 1799, a French paper entitled ‘Proceedings of a Jacobin Club formed at Seringapatnam by the French Soldiers in the Corps Commanded by Francois Ripaud’ was found in Tipu’s palace. It listed 59 Frenchmen in the pay of “citizen Tipu” and described a “primary assembly” of May 5, 1797, to elect a president (Ripaud) and other office-bearers. The ‘Rights of Man’ were proclaimed and the sultan formally received a small delegation from the club.

After this interval, we find another diary entry in which Ripaud is appalled at what he witnessed in Calicut (Kozhikode): “Most of the Hindu men and women were hanged...first mothers were hanged with their children tied to their necks. That barbarian Tipu Sultan tied the naked Christians and Hindus to the legs of elephants and made the elephants move around till the bodies of the helpless victims were torn to pieces. Temples and churches were ordered to be burned down, desecrated and destroyed. Christian and Hindu women were forced to marry Mohammedans, and similarly, their men (after conversion to Islam) were forced to marry Mohammedan women. Christians who refused to be honoured with Islam were ordered to be killed by hanging immediately.” These events were corroborated by Father Bartholomew, a famous Portuguese traveller, in his memoir, Voyage to East Indies.

Another diary entry of Ripaud says: “To show his ardent devotion and steadfast faith in the Mohammedan religion, Tipu Sultan found Kozhikode to be the most suitable place. Kozhikode was then a centre of Brahmins and had over 7,000 Brahmin families living there. Over 2,000 Brahmin families perished as a result of Tipu Sultan’s Islamic cruelties. He did not spare even women and children.”

A disgusted Ripaud left Seringapatnam and went back to France, where he obtained captainship of a fine fighting ship, the Shapho. On February 23, 1814, fighting an English frigate, Ripaud had his arm ripped off by a cannon ball. He died the same evening. Even the British, his arch enemies, gave a 21-cannon salute to this brave adventurer, once Tipu Sultan’s ‘Great White Hope’.

(The writer is editor-in-chief of La Revue de l’Inde. This piece is based on two books: Jean Feildel’s A la Mer, en Guerre: Vie du Corsaire Ripaud de Montaudevert and Louis Brunet’sRipaud de Montaudevert: Scenes de la Revolution Francaise a L’ile Bourbon.)

AARRRRRRRRRR!!!! A Sickular speaking like a communal. Please care about about your Sickular credentials before it degrades.

Tippu is glorified by Leftist-Sicular Bhagwan Gidwani in his book "Sword of tippu sultan" then how come khangress is brain washed??

All khangress is doing is holding high flag of Sicularism. And it is you who by making such remark are loosing your Sicular credential.

If your forfathers faced the brutal brunt of tippu so what???? That is now history!!! It is gone in the past.

Now standup for the cause of Sickularism and celebrate "tippu jayanti" for all in the name of sickularism and to hold it high.

All kodavas which ever party they belong and Mangalore and karwar Christians are opposing tippu celebration, already three Hindus have sacrificed their lives protesting. Many people in other parts of the state are angry with the celebrations, that too on Hindu festival day.

A decedent of converted clan who got itself "CONVERTED UNDER THE FEAR OF SWORD", how come can understand the pain of the decedents who faced all the brutalities, yet never surrendered???

This is your truth.

You mask your Militant Islamic Identity behind your socialist propaganda.

bhai jaan, i don't know who my first muslim ancestors were or how they converted, but seems you are very sure... for all you know, my ancestors would have adopted islam under influence of sufis.

You mask your Militant Islamic Identity behind your socialist propaganda.

so you have never seen me engaging the reactionary "muslims" on pdf, whether it is mujhaidind or zarvan or luffy 500 or the saudis or jordanians etc??

and Mangalore and karwar Christians are opposing tippu celebration

maybe two or three days ago, i saw two comments by christians in the "daiji world" ( mangalore media agency ) website, opposing the protesting christians.

already three Hindus have sacrificed their lives protesting.

one vhp worker/terrorist died in exchange of stone throwing in madikeri ( Two persons, including VHP member, killed in clashes over Tipu Jayanti celebration - Firstpost ).

and what is this "sacrifice"?? did he die fighting for the cause of suiciding farmers or ladies who were about to be "honor killed" by their parents??

Many people in other parts of the state are angry with the celebrations

and many would be not angry.

that too on Hindu festival day.

the "hindu festival day" is just coincidence... since it is the fascist bjp government at the center, the sangh agitation would have come regardless.

You are just one of them wearing different coat.

Look how are you commenting.
is entire karnataka angry or is it just the anger of sanghis, some nationalist coorgis and some ( not all ) christians from mangalore??

This shows how intolerant you are in your heart towards the pain of people who faced the brutality this tippu.

You are the just another face of Radical islam, nothing more nothing less.

Truth about An islamist is that he will neither speak truth nor he will accept the truth.

sufism arrived in India only after muslim invasion, all they were and are is just softer face of brutal islam. the truth is that nobody changed religion due to sufism, all sufism provided neo converted an escape root to escape harsh islamic practices which were alien to them, but cannot purge islam due to fear, it provided them some soft religious practices which were culturally mild and some what near to the culture which they earlier practiced.

you are bigot.

You consider two Christian comments as opposition?, there are thousands who hate tippu, and by the way these two Christians originated from coastal area? Go to Mangalore churches and see the mass even now they pray to Jesus that they be saved from tyrants like tippu.

one vhp worker/terrorist died in exchange of stone throwing in madikeri ( Two persons, including VHP member, killed in clashes over Tipu Jayanti celebration - Firstpost ).
And no one cares if a socialist/communist/traitors/Islamic terrorists are gunned down by special task force, but for your information VHP is not a terrorist organization, the people who have died are kannadigas, and Hindus, they have respect they deserve, they are fighting for justice, unlike your Islamic terrorists, who roam around like mad dogs killing innocent children and women, bombing temples, hijacking planes, beheading women and children and the list goes on.
and what is this "sacrifice"?? did he die fighting for the cause of suiciding farmers or ladies who were about to be "honor killed" by their parents??
And there are thousands of Hindus who are fighting for the cause of farmers, including VHP, if one dies for fighting against injustice they are called as martyers, or sacrifice, honour killing is a north Indian phenomenon we in the south have not heard about it, just we abandon them, i know even Muslims do the same if a Muslim girl elopes with a dalit Hindu in north india.

and many would be not angry.

That is not coincidence the congress govt planned it meticulously to troll Hindus, as it is not celebrated before, this is the first time it is celebrated, it could have been celebrated any time on any other day, to just get Muslim votes they are forcing people to celebrate tippu jayanthi without the wish of the people.

.
There was a very good argument made yesterday by Ramachandra Guha where he argued that the state had absolutely no business in celebration Tipu Sultan or any other king since their monarchist values were the antithesis of what the Republic of India stands for. He said that it is best to leave any such celebration to those individuals or organisations who wish to celebrate that with the state playing absolutely no part in it.

I agree with him completely.

. .
Tipu Sultans birthday is on 25th November. Any idea why Congress decided to celebrate it in 10th. November? Happens to also coincide with Diwali.

..surely it can't be.....can it?
hmm, google says it's Nov 20 but good question, why on earth did they do it on Diwali ?
