Karachi: PIA plane engine catches fire

KARACHI: The engine of an Islamabad-bound Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight, with Members National Assembly, federal ministers, and Chief Justice of Pakistan on board caught fire just before take off here on Sunday, Geo News reported.



The flight, PK-300 was on the taxiway when the fire broke out in one of its engines, sources said.



Declaring emergency, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) cancelled the flight.



Rescue teams have been sent in for bringing the fire under control and evacuation of passengers.



Federal Minister, Maula Bux Chandio, talking exclusively to Geo News slammed PIA for its mismanagement and utter incompetence.



"Smoke billowing out of the burning engine escaped into fuselage after they opened the emergency exit hatch. It was suffocating in there. I saw many passengers, who were not feeling well at all, gasping for air", said he.



MNA, Yousuf Talpur, who was also on the plane, picked apart PIA for risking passengers' lives by using planes which should have been retired by now.



"The entry of this very aircraft we were on board is banned in Europe" he said.



National flag carrier has a history of technical issues owing to outdated and under-maintained fleet.

Engine number 1 of the aircraft failed to start after push back and the aircraft was moved back to terminal for rectification of fault, according to statement of CAA official quoted by PTV News.

Engine number 2 of the aircraft experienced some problem, according to statement of a PIA spokesman quoted by a news channel.

Departure of flight PK-308 is now delayed. The same aircraft will operate this flight after repair work.

We all know that the media reported engine catching fire of a A310 after take off and recommending medal for the pilot, while in the end it turned out to be a compressor stall. And the one engine was functioning normally, while the other was on reduced thrust for the landing.

Same case here, the media has a habit of exaggerating things. The engine did not start for after pushback, and maybe some compressor problems again. Compressor problems usually mean some bangs and thuds and sparks.

Politicians are drama queens as well, so again no surprise. How can smoke from an engine problem get into the fuselage??? And how can you be sitting in the plane without oxygen? APU is still active, regardless of the engine. Exaggerating the issue, our favorite past time.

Plane was a 747 if you go by the numbers being flashed on TV. TV saying 400 people were in the plane.

what bothering you from PIA beta ? its an airline and every airline on earth have some problems . if i start follow your indian aviation and post news just for sake of ego i have daily a thread on it but i don't care abut indian aviation .

Air India ke saare planes le jao.....
Many of them rattle so much in mid air, that I sometimes get the feeling the thing will fall apart right now..!!

Agar aap planes le loge to hopefully AI kuch naye planes khareedega....
