. . .
Guys, I have a few questions.

1. Are these nullahs natural streams or purpose built storm drains?
2. Why are they open?
3. Why are homes built so close to them?
4. who dumps the waste into them?
5. This is more of a comment, but that looks disgusting even after it's cleaned up.

. .
This drain clearing is a little more than a gimmick, it's not going to do anything meaningful. The entire drainage system of the city is shot and needs to be rebuilt from the bottom.

I agree. The NDMA stated as much, that the issues are complex and require long term fixes with the cooperation of all stakeholders (hint towards the Sindh government getting its act together).

The storm drain clearance, as explained by the NDMA, is a temporary and immediate action to minimize the negative impact of the next spell of rain.

We need to build proper drainage system that will prevent flooding in the future.
These kind of drainage system were build in 40s and 50s in other countries.

Sewage and Rain water drainage system should be completely separate. picture below shows sewage system build in 1840 in Hamburg, Germany.

1. These nullahs follow the natural course of the land and fall into the Lyari river. A city-wide network of storm drains was constructed by the British in the early 20th century which fed into these nullahs and streams. They used to carry clean water back in the 70s and 80s. But then, due to sheer incompetence, as the population mushroomed and the KDA went to the dogs, some corrupt thugs deliberately linked the city's sewage mains to the nullahs. Thus the clean water streams and storm water drains which were supposed to remain dry except when it rained were turned into sewage mains carrying both liquid and solid waste from residential and industrial areas which is then dumped untreated into the sea
2. They are open because they are technically still rivers/streams and you can not practically cover them. The British era network is storm drains and those later built by the KDA are all mostly covered
3. The homes are built close to them due to the unchecked growth of the city in which every tom dick and harry has made his way to Karachi. Specially from the Southern Punjab region. This stimulated the growth of slums and squatter colonies along the lengths of these streams. Whatever was left was illegally allotted to desperate poor people by the land mafia of Karachi which was primarily led by one Babar Ghauri during the MQM/Musharraf era
4. The city has no local government system to speak of. The entire garbage collection has been handed over to the 'kachra mafia' - basically Afghans who operate out of Karachi's infamous Al-Asif Square area. The city authorities and provincial government receive fat commissions from these 'kachra dons' who are also widely involved in activities such as kidnapping and rape. Also, the entire business of heavy construction and earth moving equipment is also in the hands of these Afghans - basically a huge criminal enterprise operating under the protection of the Sindh government
5. The FWO and NDMA while doing a commendable job, this is only a temporary fix. So it's supposed to look dirty

So nexy year we will be standing on same place.

Does Punjab throw their poop in the clean Indus River streams, or is it buried in the fertile soil? I think that’s a problem too!

Karachi needs a proper trash sanitation department. All that trash is just going to reappear in a few weeks from the bins of the locals.

Hell, the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation is sponsoring the tech to turn plastic wastes into drip irrigation tubing, electricity, fertilizer. Little man 100% honestly cant spend $10 million to buy this shit?

Aik aur barish ki spell ho rahi hai.. aur Sheher e Karachi talaab ka manzar paish kar raha hai.

People's hard earned properties are damaged, no sign of electrcity and water.

Leaders of Pakistan live in premium housing socities with clean water, drainage system and gardens meanwhile the working class of financial hub of country cries for basic rights.
