What's new

Karachi could be wiped out completely by tsunami

Also heard about NY it is still standing, such predictions are getting old.

Exactly. Karachi is no more or no less at risk compared to any other major coastal city. There is no real news here.

. . .
I am sure that @RescueRanger can help us with any plans the government might already have in case of a tsunami hitting Karachi.

Okay, so this is a complex one to answer. the reasons are as follows:

When an underwater quake "sea quake" will occur the USGS and other monitoring stations will submit seismic data to the United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs : OCHA will then transfer the data on GDACS: Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System - which can be accessed by host nations, disaster managers etc. You can see GDACS live here: Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System

Then there is a very short period of time after the sea quake, that the level of emergency would be assessed, UN GDACS calculates risk to life and property and color codes this based on the reported death and displaced and the likelyhood of impact on population. Red = 1000 or more people killed or 800000 or more people displaced. Orange = 100 or more people killed or 80000 or more displaced.

This information is shared at national host nation level with all relevant stakeholders. The Government would then activate the National Disaster Management plan see bellow and classify the level of emergency:

Emergency classifications fall into 3 levels:

Level 1. Localized emergency events for example, small scale fire, landslides, flood, canal or sub canal breach, low level epidemics etc dealt by DDMA at district level. The DDMA is capable of handling the situation on its own. Emergency may be declared by District Nazim. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

Level 2. Emergency/disaster which overwhelms the capacity of the district disaster management authority to manage the situation, DDMA can request for assistance to the PDMC through PDMA. In this situation an emergency is declared by the Chief Executive of the Province. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

Level 3. In case emergency/disaster is beyond the capacity of provincial/regional government national emergency is declared by the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Appeal may be launched internationally for the assistance. Actions and responsibilities are as under:-

So as you can see it would be an escalating level of response, depending on the probability of loss to life and property, evacuation for a city with a population of 23.5 Million and some of the most densely populated areas in the world would be a nightmare.

This would all depend on how much time was available to alert the population and encourage a smooth evacuation without causing widespread panic. Bellow is a simulated model of the 2004 Tsunami just to give you an idea of the limitation of time when it comes to tsunami response.

In closing, Allah na karey key Tsunami aye!

@RescueRanger Thanks for detailed answer. If you don't mind i need to ask few info. How i can contact you. as i ddint see any option to send you private message. thanks

Most coastal cities would have to endure such a massive destruction. Depends on how far was the earthquake and hence the speed/level at which Tsunami arrives.

.
“This would create waves of 0.9 to seven metres high that could reach Karachi in one and a half hours,”

“The city is vulnerable because there is a chance of another tsunami in the same vicinity but we don’t know when,” Alam said.

Weather can be predicted for months in advance. And precise weather forecasting is done for weeks.

“We did not know it would be so bad”, if decision makers say this for rains and floods, what do you expect from them to do in the event of a tsunami which gives a very short notice of around 1.5 hours before hitting the shores of Karachi and that will happen if an earthquake happens in the Arabian sea and an earthquake is not predictable at all.

“This could wipe out the city as the waves would be immensely powerful.”

We cannot help averting wiping out of villages forget about a city

Karachi was hit by a tsunami in 1945 that killed at least 4,000 people, Alam said.

But it is not clear whether Karachi has a tsunami evacuation plan, or whether one would even be feasible in the chaotic, sprawling city.

“We will evaluate what works well, where improvements are needed, make necessary changes and continue to practice,” the meteorologist said.

Only one tsunami and that also pre-independence!?

Well, 21 major floods excluding the present one and 67 years on what did we learn and what was done to protect the life and property as per the constitution which says the protection of life and property of citizens is the duty of the government.

A repeat would likely have a devastating effect on Pakistan nationally, since Karachi, the country’s main port, accounts for around 42 per cent of national GDP.

Agriculture being one of the big main industries in Pakistan, what did the governments do for it to safeguard them from natural calamities let alone a city the size of Karachi.

In the event of a tsunami, real-time data would be sent to the Met Office in Karachi from Indonesian, Australian and Indian centres.

An alarm would sound when an alert was issued and the team would start disseminating the data to around a dozen disaster management departments.

“Our goal is to ensure the timely and effective notification of tsunamis, to educate communities at risk about safety preparedness and to improve our overall coordination,” Alam said.

Yes, same like the alerts and advance information of the floods and the rain.

Good morning Pakistan and a have a 'bright" future.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s largest city Karachi, home to around 18 million people, could be “wiped out” by a tsunami, officials said Wednesday after a drill simulating a major earthquake in the Indian Ocean.

The test, and one carried out a day earlier simulating another quake off Indonesia, were designed to check an early-warning system set up after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 230,000 people.

The exercise organised by the United Nations was based on a hypothetical 9.0 magnitude quake in the Makran Trench, where the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, off the coast of Pakistan.

“This would create waves of 0.9 to seven metres high that could reach Karachi in one and a half hours,” Tauseef Alam, the chief meteorologist who was supervising the tests, told AFP.

“This could wipe out the city as the waves would be immensely powerful.”

Make a big, thick wall to protect karachi.

There is no such thing as a 9.0 earth quake, so no chance of Tsunami.

Only even that will wipe out a city size of Karachi is a Meteor strike in oceans deep impact and that would not mean end of Karachi but end of most coastal cities in world

Also we don't have a active earth quake underground plate like one that is active in Japan or Indonesia where the "real" land formation is taking place

But there is an active palte in Gujarat Kutch area. That may cause tsunami in India, Pakistan.

Well , we could get hit by a meteor while people sleep etc

Most coastal cities will go underwater anyways due to Water levels that are rising
