This is basically a result of ongoing divisions in the Bengali identity within India. A section of Assam-based historians and linguists are in a propaganda campaign of proving people from Northern West Bengal and Barak Valley to be distinct from Bengalis, there are certain strategic reasons behind it. That user Assamiya Leora used to post such distorting histories here in PDF. Funnily enough, we don't have any such identity divisions in Bangladesh.

This crisis should be largely blamed on the intellectual class of West Bengal who, instead of countering these propaganda against Bengali identity, are only busy in writing imaginary stories about Bangladeshi Hindus. There are some Bengali nationalist groups like Bangla Pokkho and Amra Bangali in West Bengal who are conscious against such anti-Bengali propaganda but haven't been able to gain mass support, how unfortunate!
