According to the Central Police Office (CPO), there has been a 70 per cent drop in terrorist activities across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). In a handout issued on Saturday, the CPO reports that this year only 90 incidents were reported thus far as compared to 274 recorded last year.

K-P, in the year 2009, saw terrorist activities peak to record levels; this only settled in 2016, dubbed the most peaceful year in the province. Since 2009, the province has also seen a significant drop in target killings and kidnappings for ransom.
In the year 2009, a record 178 kidnapping cases were reported across K-P in which wealthy individuals were abducted for ransom, dropping to 16 cases in the year 2016 and six cases in the first seven months of the current year.

This year, 21 people have been killed in target-killing incidents as compared to 72 such cases last year and 643 similar incidents in the year 2013 in the province. Police, army and pro-government tribal elders were prime targets at the time.

Twenty-seventeen has also witness a considerable drop in the number of extortion cases in the province with 16 cases registered this year against 44 last year and 344 cases in the year 2014. It is suspected, however, that the actual number is much higher owing to a reluctance in reporting the case to the police for fear of their own safety.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a police officer said there was a considerable drop in the mentioned cases but it was still a threat and extra vigilance on part of the police, as well as other law enforcement agencies, was required.

What police have to do with it apart from being victim of terrorism? Attacks were reduced after Nawaz operation, lets be fair PTI won few seats in KP on back of taliban support. While ruling party ANP was not allowed to step outside by tallies.

PTI then donate rs300 million of public money to Haqqani madrassa after coming to power.

I have no political knowledge..i am just saying that we should empower our police give them proper judicial cover and to their informants/ under covers...apart from that massive judicial reforms

NS ,,, are you serious? NS opposing this ... Even IK was apposing this ... Only credit goes to RS ...

WHen NS and IK both were talking about negotiations and talks army already started the operation and both of them concur subsequently ...

Agreed, although army did the operation but had our police was working it would have never come to the stage of operation ...

I have heard that KPK police has improved but real test would be after end of operation and army goes back into barracks ...

The credit does go to the Police. It's the reforms and most importantly the independence of Police from political authorities that has resulted in this sustained long term peace. The Army can go in and smash the militants, but its the Police that has to build relations with the community and provide them with long term protection. Army is not trained for policing duties and can never do that in the long term.

Credit goes to PTI for completely removing any political influence over Police because now the Police Officers can actually focus on doing their job instead of running around after the VIP's.

Police in KPK has been completed empowered and removed from any political influence. Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan are another story.

Sir your comment can be correct but can be incorrect ... Right now you should acknowledge that without army operation police was of no use ...

Having said this real test will start when army will be back in barracks and I will be happy if KPK police will deliver ...

Furthermore, I am not a KPK resident so my comment is based on media reports only ...

Actually KpK police has a big role and sacrifices in all this.

Army operations had been and are going on in FATA areas not in main KpK mostly.

Agreed. The role of KPK police cannot be ignored and the police reforms which range from non politicization of police to equipment and newer stations highlights their work and efficiency whereas in Punjab the police asks the complainant to go bring the paper to write a complaint on.

Military can tackle hideouts and bomb places and combat insurgents but street level work will always be done by police or paramilitary forces.

The reason why Baluchistan so suffers despite intelligence warnings is bcz the police over there is simply not up to par. If lahore is being targeted again and again then its bcz the Punjab police is wholly incompetent.

Military and local enforcement both play a huge role in security and I know this may be impossible for N slaves to understand but the fact is that true security can only be created when both do their job right along with govt on state and local levels.

As for Nawaz ordering operations. Khuda ja khauf karo tum nooners. Sharam hiya naam ki cheez hain. Nawaz and Imran were both pro talks and despite Karachi airport incident Nawaz wanted to continue the joke of the talks until the military stepped in and said no. I remember how nooners were crying that military is interfering again and this operation would backfire. Now they have come claiming credit. Shameless

Excellent news, but much more need to be done.

Police force need massive transformation so that the Army is send to borders. It should not be army responsibility to deal with what happen inside the borders, police should be strong enough to take care of province.

lets be fair, ANP members are coward simply dont put blame on PTI for that

Very wrong on our part. taking madrassa in main steam education is a crime?? How??, we should regulate all madrassas instead of one. I appreciate this step of KPK Govt.

Army was in Swat BUT not now, Its police maintaining peace there.. If you have any example of army in there, enlighten us with that as well.

Have some shame please.

There is government of PMLu(N) in Balochistan and we can see how good they are handling law and order situation in that province. Whatever gains we had made in Balochistan under Dr Malik and General Janjua are getting lost under great leadership of current CM and corps commander.

If Nawaz sharif operation was responsible for improvement in KPK then why don't you do similar operation in Balochistan where you have government. That poor government has no law and order infrastructure and all responsibility is on FB balochistan in which they too keep failing.
