TBH, Russia, in general, lags behind west in jet engine technology especially in the aerospace. And China lags behind Russia in engine technology. However, I think China is investing some serious money and effort in developing a capable engine that will be comparable to its western counterparts but it will take some time as West took a long time to reach it stands today and their cumulative body of knowledge is huge.
