Without getting into jingoism - the fact is that Pakistani leadership has used its nukes to blackmail the world. What Nawaz said was - "Tell India to stop the Kargil operation - and get to the negotiating table - else this could spiral into a nuclear war." Just before this - Sartaz Aziz demanded a meeting with Jaswant Singh which lasted all of 5 minutes, the crux was - Pakistan told India to stop Kargil offensive and India refused. Pakistan's problem in Kargil was -
a. It all along claimed that these were "freedom fighters" when in reality they were Army Regulars.
b. India used their Air Force and Pakistan because it claimed these were not Army regulars could not provide any Air Support.
c. India pounded them with Bofors - Pakistan had not taken the power of these guns into account. India lifted sanctions on Bofors to imports the necessary bullets.
d. Pakistan was looking at a face-saving exit. So while Nawaz agreed with Clinton to evacuate from the Kargil heights - India continued to shoot the Pakistanis even when they were on their way down. This probably was the catalyst for the coup which followed. The Pakistani soldiers were left high and dry.
e. Lastly, I remember quite clearly that Nawaz inserted one line to the Clinton joint statement which stated that Bill Clinton would take a "personal interest" in resolving the Kashmir dispute. In those days the Pakistanis were showing this as some form of victory - that no American President has vowed to take a "personal interest" in Kashmir. In reality - it was America pretty much saying - "Err, sorry - The United States can't help you." Surely, someone can dig up that joint statement.
And don't talk about using nukes as if it is some form of joke. Generations continue to suffer in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Responsible states should not engage in nuclear brinksmanship.
All said and done - I still fear that a stray nuke would probably emanate from North Korea - that guy there is a complete nutjob - feed his uncle to hungry dogs and what not. Pakistan probably has a pretty secure grasp on its nukes - but it would like the world to believe that - "hey - that nuke can fall into the wrong hands here - then all bets are off." It is a very risky bluff and while it may work every now and then - at some point, it might backfire royally. It is one thing to blackmail Clinton - imagine this same conversation with Cheney - he would probably have marched in troops into Pakistan.
Such amateur comments on PDF shows how insecure indians are.Or how little they know about our nuclear striking capabilities.I know it,s hard for you to accept the fact that india cannot afford to have a war with pakistan and if they try then india will no longer exist. And it, even more painful for the staunch hindus because India is the only hindu nation in the world and no india means no Hinduism .Our nukes are capable of putting your beloved religion in the category of "extinct religions"
Let me just quote you Allama Iqbal -
Yunan-o-misr-o-roma, sab mit gaye jahan se
Ab tak magar hai baqi, nam-o-nishan hamara
Kuch bat hai keh hasti, mitati nahin hamari
Sadiyon raha hai dushman, daur-e-zaman hamara
