Was he called by someone? Did he go at someone's invitation? Or was it a pleasure trip?

Dude, obviously bajra group used an agent to lure him there in the promise of sensitive info/news. The agent probably had a local hire another local to do the job and that’s that.

He was in the UK just a few days ago and now all of sudden he was in Nairobi?

Journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad was murdered in tribal area on May 30th, 2011.
He wrote that Mehran base attack was carried by alqaeda. Before that UBL was killed in Abbottabad. Humiliation after Humiliation.
Of course no one apprehended for poor journalist's murder who left two young children orphans.
