Thousands in Jordan call for end of peace treaty with Israel - Haaretz Daily Newspaper | Israel News

Thousands of Jordanians took to the streets on Friday demanding an end to the country's 18-year-old Wadi Araba peace treaty with Israel.

In a series of nationwide protests, leftist and Islamist activists urged Amman to cut ties with Israel, burning Israeli flags and chanting "death, death to Israel" and "the people want an end to Wadi Araba."

Protest organizers, including the Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood and youth movements, said the demonstrations came as a direct response to King Abdullah's recent nomination of Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh, who served as a key figure in the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace process.

Various political and social groups have expressed outrage over comments recently made by Tarawneh indicating that, if given a second chance, he would still support the controversial peace treaty.

"This is a person who obviously does not respect the people's will and his words are proof of how out of touch he is with average citizens," Jamil Abu Baker, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, told dpa.

Popular opinion in Jordan is that the 1994 Wadi Araba treaty is a failure, with politicians and officials accusing Israel of not respecting its obligations under the pact, particularly regarding water sharing, Amman's custodianship over holy sites in Jerusalem, and access to the Palestinian territories.

Friday marked a departure from activists' demands for democratic reforms, the focus of the vast majority of the some 1,000 protests that have hit Jordan since the start of the so-called Arab Spring uprisings that were triggered in late 2010.

Arab spring has been pretty rough for Israel. Traditional allies like Turkey, as well as ones acquired through painstaking diplomacy like Egypt and Jordan are beginning to turn their backs on Israel. Israel needs to re-balance the geopolitics of the region and find new alliances to survive.

Saudi Arabia will continue to accommodate Israel to spite Iran, and Azerbaijan is a promising new ally. But it seems Israel is very vulnerable in its immediate border region.

I think we should ask our resident Jordanian 'BlackEagle' as to what the People of Jordan want; I'm sure we've all seen some creative journalism in the past decade or so and so I think he'd be a better source then a news article ! Just my thoughts...!

I'm sure the vast majority of Arabs and Muslims want their nations to cut ties with this apartheid, terrorist state. They just need to bring the rulers who will take note of what they want.

If either Egypt or Jordan go back on their agreements with Israel then it will only give credence to the viewpoint that Arabs and Muslims cannot be trusted to abide by their agreements and they, at best, seek a 'Hudna' (a temporary truce).

At any rate, Jordan has too little of influence to make the Palestinians lives better. Same can be said about Lebanon and Syria. But Egypt is a different ball game. They should still honor their agreements.

There are ways to end the suffering of the Palestinians. I think the tides of time and demographics will eventually lead to that. Dishonoring agreements is not the way to slow down that natural process. Israeli occupation of Palestinians is criminal but it can't last forever. Nothing lasts forever.

The vast majority of Jordanians demand cutting off all relations with Israel, king Abdullah and the government always state that the diplomatic relationship serves Palestinian interests since it imposes free aids/passengers transit to/from Palestinian territory as well as Jordanian custody of Alaqsa mosque, during Israel/Egypt blockade of of gaza strip, Jordan send $50 M aids as well as field hospital. Anyway, Jordan and Israel relations is at its worst since Israeli attack on Gaza in 2009.

Egypt's national security chief Abu Gheit denied that:
"Israel was surprised by the decision of war taken by the Egyptian side, denying the rumors that Jordan was informed of the date of Israel go to Egypt to war against it."

While Anwar Alsadat is the one who betrayed Syrians and Arabs:
Very interesting article has got revealed for the first time by the Soviet foreign minister Vladimir Vinogradov 1967 to 1970 and USSR ambassador in Egypt 1970 to 1974, talking about Egypt role in 1973 war exposing Egypt's presedent berayal to Arabs and Syrians in 1973 war,

How is Saudi Arabia accommodating israel?? We are always the most vocal criticizers of Israel in the UN. We have always been the ones to push UN action and resolutions against Israel. We are one of the few cow tries left to have an effective boycott of Israel goods and always the ones who are pushing for it everywhere. Because of turkey's stand against Israel we were the ones to come and try to balance out ipany negative effect this thing is having on Turkey by investing heavily in Turkey and supporting its military industry.

I really don't know how the hell do people still think Saudi Arabia and Israel are even acquaintances let alone friends. Sure we are Anti-Iran but being against Iran does not automatically means pro-Israel. Saudi Arabia is still one of the few countries that is maintaining the status of "At war" with Israel till today.

Not because some journalists have a brain fart and write an article about their brain fart that means that said fart is true.

Jordan is powerless against Israel. Israel can level Jordan within a couple of minutes using its vast arsenal of multimegaton nuclear weapons.

Ending peace treaty with Israel is definitely not in Jordan's interests. All Jordan can hope is some mercy from Israel. Ending peace treaty would end the mercy of Israel.

What does that mean? What has Saudi Arabia done to accommodate Israel.
