RIYADH

A Jordanian F-16 fighter jet crashed in southern Saudi Arabia, reportedly due to a “technical error”, according to a Saudi-led Arab military coalition in which the aircraft had been taking part.

“The pilot survived the crash and is in good health,” read a Friday statement issued by the coalition.

According to the statement, the incident occurred in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern Najran region near the border with Yemen.

Yemen has remained wracked by conflict since 2014, when the Shia Houthi militia and forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh overran capital Sanaa and other parts of the country.

The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched an extensive air campaign -- to which Jordan contributed six F-16s -- aimed at reversing Houthi military gains and shoring up Yemen’s Saudi-backed government.

CAIRO — A news portal linked to the Jordanian military says an F-16 fighter jet has crashed in Saudi Arabia, and the pilot has survived.

The Hala Akhbar website quotes an unidentified military official on Friday as saying that the jet was taking part in the Saudi-led coalition’s campaign against Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The website didn’t provide details on the site of the crash but said that pilot Adnan Nabas has safely landed with a parachute. He will be heading to Jordan on Friday.

The U.S.-backed coalition of mostly Arab Gulf countries, which includes Egypt, Jordan and Sudan, was formed to restore the internationally recognized Yemeni government after Houthis forced President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to flee the country.

The coalition has carried out hundreds of airstrikes targeting Houthi sites across Yemen.
