The US has pressed Pakistan to reduce its growing nuclear arsenal but Islamabad has refused to accept any curbs on it saying America must show “greater understanding” of its security concerns in South Asia.

Citing the example of the US and Russia which are working to further reduce their nuclear arsenals, Secretary of State John Kerry asked Pakistan to understand this reality and review its nuclear policy. The nuclear issue was discussed during security talks held here yesterday as part of the US-Pakistan strategic dialogue.

“I think, it is important for Pakistan to really process that reality and put that front and centre in its policy,” Kerry said in an apparent reference to the reports that Pakistan has the fastest growing stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world.

His remarks come ahead of this month’s Nuclear Security Summit to be hosted here by President Barack Obama that would be attended by Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

“We look forward to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s participation in the nuclear security summit next month,” Kerry said, adding “non-proliferation” and “nuclear safety” is of obvious concern to both countries.

“I expect that we continue to discuss the obligation of being a responsible state with nuclear weapons in the coming year,” he said.

“As you know United States of America once had 50,000 (nuclear) warheads pointing at another country/entity the Soviet Union. Soviet Union had 50,000 pointing at us. It took two Presidents (Mikhail) Gorbachev and (Ronald) Reagan to decide that this did not make sense,” Kerry said.

“We have moved in a completely opposite direction. And today, Russia and the United States are operating under a treaty that has about 1500 or so nuclear warheads and we are seeking to reduce that,” said the top American diplomat.

On the other hand, Aziz sought nuclear mainstreaming of Pakistan.

“Our engagement on non-proliferation and strategic stability will continue and Pakistan hopes to see greater US understanding of Pakistan’s security concerns and its desire to contribute actively as a mainstream nuclear power,” he said.

Pakistan has said that it will not accept any unilateral curbs on its nuclear programme and that any reduction should apply to India as well and the US should also consider its concerns on the growing weapons disparity

Pakistan will not accept any unilateral curbs

This is the first time we hear about any scope of nuclear disarmament

Exactly like this if feasible in any mean, otherwise big powers should start first and then so on till the last N power as for us N is the more sufficient and authentic defence yet against our enemies especially the enemy which is in love of weapons more than before.

Usual american hypocrisy. Reduce your arsenal first americans.

Not the first time nor will be the last. Indian nuclear weapons and conventional edge is reason for our nuclear weapons. If they are here and growing, ours will too. Not really a rocket science to get this.

Answer should be ,Fine you want to Link F16 with Nukes ,we dont need them .So our operation on Afg/Pak border will suffer due to missing of crucial strike package .In Afg dont blase us of run over by Taliban .

As you have rightly pointed out that 'Indian nuclear weapons and conventional edge is reason for our nuclear weapons' Therefore Pakistan should not bow under US pressure and accept any bilateral reductions of Nukes until there is conventional parity or cessation of hostilities between the arch rivals

I agree with Senator Kerry here. This does not make sense.
50 can do the job, then why maintain a load of 500.
No body is stopping you from the research work, if any of that exits.
It's just a number so, pick a safe one & move forward from there.
Obviously losing or reducing part of nuclear arsenal should mean a strong conventional defense to be the spearhead.
Mr.Senator and his likes should offer Pakistan something that she can't refuse.F-16s are certainly not that. So, they will have to do more.

We all know who is behind this ''reducing Nuclear weapons'' demand ................. its a hostile country too scared to say such things face to face openly............... as it will send impression to its own people that they are scared of Pakistan............... so they use Uncle Sam back as cover.................
Too bad, just too bad.
Pakistan will show Middle Finger once again............. to both Uncle Sam, and Uncle in Dhoti behind uncle Sam

Now why do you not tell your ally Israel to reduce its arsenal.

We have many sub kiloton nukes for Nasr and Ra'ad which are not enough to take full India, even old uranium based warhead being replaced with lighter power plutonium warheads and old one serve as backup....we need many more warheads for second strike or in case of direct attack on nuclear facility.

Even if India gives up its nuclear weapons, Pakistan cannot. With a significantly smaller military it needs the nukes. If it has to give up, it will then need a military alliance. And that is a completely different can of worms.

The strong conventional defense can do the same. That is to deny the aggressors the space to pose a threat of attacking or damaging your nuclear facilities. As senator Kerry has indicated above, they have been doing all that, which you have mentioned above, in their cold war era.We are now in their sixties.
I'm confident that the Pakistanis can work out a safe number.Military and diplomacy has been on the same page, so far.
