Jogger Shoe Swirled at Indian Minister P Chadambaram

I think this shoe was more for judicial system's ineffectiveness rather than for our home minister.
Judicial process is in India is way long and frustrating and it is 25 years that the sikh brothers have been denied justice ....

same is case for 1993 bomb accused and other criminals

so its quite natural to get frustrated but chidambaram definitely shd not been target ...there are lot many who deserve...

.
It would be nice if Manmohan Singh would come out, and be clear about the whole contrversy, after all he is a sikh and it should satisfy all sides.

Manmohan Singh gave a public apology some time ago, though that is no substitute for justice., I would agree.

But then, the Khalistan issue was a complicated one, to brand anybody but the terrorists as villains would be wrong. After all, the movement was crushed successfully, and many people put their lives and careers on the line in order to do that.
Let us remember that its the Sikhs themselves who ultimately fought to contain that ghastly ideology. And that was a real victory for the Indian federation.

Angry scribe flings shoe at Chidambaram
April 07, 2009
Months after an infuriated Iraqi scribe flung a shoe at US President George Bush [Images], an angry journalist -- apparently upset over Congress leader Jagdish Tytler being given a clean chit over his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots -- flung a shoe at Home Minister Chidambaram [Images] during a press conference in New Delhi [Images] on Tuesday.

The shoe, however, missed the target.

Chidambaram, who was addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters, was surprised when suddenly Jarnail Singh, journalist from a Hindi daily, flung the shoe and an alert Home Minister made a quick movement to see it pass by him. Police said he was freed after a brief detention.

"Please take him away," said Chidambaram who later added "gently, gently" as the journalist was escorted out of the press conference hall. Later, he was taken away by police but it was not clear whether any case has been registered against him against the backdrop of Chidambaram saying, "I forgive him."

As the action caused a flutter in the hall, a composed Chidambaram appealed to reporters, "Let not the action of one emotional person hijack the entire press conference. I have answered his questions to the best of my ability."

It all started with the journalist asking him about the clean chit given by CBI to Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case under pressure from the government.

"First of all let me make it clear that CBI is not under the Home Ministry. To my knowledge neither the Home Ministry nor any ministry of the government had put any pressure on the CBI,' Chidambaram said.

"The CBI has only given a report to the court. It is for the court to accept or reject or ask for further investigation by CBI. Let us wait for the court decision," he said.

As the journalist persisted with his questions, Chidambaram told him, "No arguments, you are using this forum..." following which the journalist hurled his shoe.

Singh said he will not apologise for his action, though his manner of protest might have been wrong.

"My manner of protest might have been wrong, but I did not intend to hurt anyone," he said.

Asked if he could have used some other manner to protest, he said, "For the last 25 years this has been happening. So what other method is left (to protest)."

Earlier this month, CBI had given a clean chit to 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Tytler and sought permission from the court for the closure of the case against the Congress leader.

Probably just some guy who lost his loved ones in the riots & was furious at the fact that Tytler was set free. Probably he just wanted to vent his frustration on Congress.

Should not have chosed PC though. Arjun singh would have been a better choice!!! I always wanted to boot him :chilli::chilli:

I wont, he should not have targetted Mr Chidambaram. He is a very able and a talented leader, and does not belong to the class of sick politicians.

And by the way, Chidambaram asked the security not to hurt him and has pardoned him himself. Now thats what a "true' leader is.

if he had to throw it at someone then maybe sonia ghandhi??? or someone from their family i guess... chidambram is one of our bests and it was disapointing to see that. by the way does anyone know what sonia ghandhi is doing in india... i mean she just gets paid for nothing she doesnt contribute to the progress of the country

.
it was a gesture of pent up anger....chidambram was unlucky to be there..could have been any congress memeber...they in a way deserve it for fielding tytler.
i have the utmost respect for him though...plain unlucky.

.
Funny part is Mr Chidambaram has nothing to do with 1984 riots (or so I understand), neither is he in any way involved in the investigation. His ill fortune is that, he is the home minister at present.

A wrong man, at a wrong time and place.

However, I personally sympathize with the journos sentiments.

The only person one can blame would be Rajiv Gandhi, because of his late reaction to the unprecedented situation in the country in 1984. And in addition to that he gave the outrageous statement justifying the violence.

Sonia is very much Indian even though she is italian by birth. She has been leading the party and has been actively involved in all decision making since the death of Rajiv Gandhi. I wouldnt doubt her intent or contribution towards India.

She also publicly apologized to the Sikh community for the '84 riots, and Rajiv Gandhi's outrageous statement "When a big tree gets uprooted, the earth is bound to shake" in 1998. The Sikh community immensely appreciated the gesture.

We dont have many choices when it comes to selecting politicians to lead the country. But we should try and make the best of what we have. I would always want to see Manmohan as the PM, Mukherjee as defence minister/ foreign minister/ finance minister. But more importantly I would like to see Chidambaram as the home minister, because it is the internal security that needs to be ramped up. And I believe none can do the job better than Harvard graduate P Chidambaram.

NEW DELHI: A Sikh journalist on Tuesday hurled a shoe at home minister P Chidambaram protesting against CBI's clean chit to senior Congress

The shoe, however, missed its target.

Chidambaram, who was addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi, was surprised when Jarnail Singh, a journalist from Hindi daily Dainik Jagran, flung the shoe and an alert home minister quickly moved away to see it pass by him.

"Please take him away," said Chidambaram who smiled and later added "gently, gently" as the journalist was escorted out of the press conference hall. Later, he was taken away by police. It is not clear whether any case has been registered against him against the backdrop of Chidambaram saying "I forgive him".

As the action caused a flutter in the hall, a composed Chidambaram appealed to the reporters, "let not the action of one emotional person hijack the entire press conference. I have answered his questions to the best of my ability."

It all started with the journalist asking him about the clean chit given by CBI to Tytler in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case under pressure from the government.

"First of all let me make it clear that CBI is not under the home ministry. To my knowledge neither the home ministry nor any ministry of the government had put any pressure on the CBI," Chidambaram said.

"CBI has only given a report to the court. It is for the court to accept or reject or ask for further investigation by CBI. Let us wait for the court decision," he said.

As the journalist persisted with his questions, Chidambaram told him "no arguments, you are using this forum..." following which the journalist hurled his shoe.

An unapologetic Singh said he will not apologise for his action, though his manner of protest might have been wrong. "My manner of protest might have been wrong, but I did not intend to hurt anyone," he said.

Asked if he could have used some other manner to protest, he said, "for the last 25 years this has been happening. So what other method is left (to protest)".

Earlier this month, CBI had given a clean chit to 1984 anti-Sikh riots accused Tytler and sought permission from the court for the closure of the case against the Congress leader.

Police took the journalist into custody ad questioned him. Singh was taken to Tuglaq Road police station from the AICC headquarters where the incident took place.

Jarnail Singh was later released by police after brief detention.

Station house officer of Tughlaq Road Police station Anil Kumar Yadav told reporters that the scribe has been freed for the time being.

"No case has been registered against him. He has regretted about his action," the official said, adding that the journalist was questioned for his action and then he was released.

After being freed, the Sikh journalist, who has caused a flutter in the political circle, said the issue that he raised was an appropriate issue and the victims should get justice.

This was the latest incident of show-throwing as a mark of protest against political leaders, including former US President George W Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

The Iraqi journalist who shot to worldwide fame for hurling his shoes at Bush last year was jailed for three years. Muntadhar al-Zaidi shocked the world by throwing his shoes at then US president George W Bush in December.

Sitting in the third row at a press conference attended by Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, the reporter 'jumped up' and shouted "It is the farewell kiss, you dog."
