Jinnah’s photo put up at Indian jail leaves ruling BJP, Hindu extremists fuming

He initially was a follower of Gokhale and Tilak. Calling Jinnah a freedom fighter though is a bit fanciful. Unlike Gandhi, Nehru, Patel etc. from what I know the man did not spend a single day in a British prison fighting for freedom.

Jinnah was a thorough gentleman in the true Edwardian mould. Jinnah was a staunch constitutionalist and as a lawyer first and foremost, Jinnah revered the rule of law. Nevertheless, his contributions to India's freedom struggle are absolutely second to none.

When Gandhi stepped on Indian soil from South Africa in 1914, Jinnah was already the leader of India’s freedom struggle. It was Jinnah, not Nehru or Gandhi, who defended freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh in Central Assembly and in the court... It was Jinnah, not Gandhi who went out to avenge Tilak's humiliation .. AG Noorani argues that it is important for Indians to reclaim Jinnah as a freedom fighter and integral figure in their own history .. And to quote Sanjiv Bhatt, Jinnah did far more for the Indian Freedom Movement than the entire RSS put together. He was a freedom fighter both India and Pakistan should be proud of.

why you want him to spend a night i jail ? he did great he was gentleman with honor

All freedom fighters around the world from Mandela to Micheal Collins spent time in jail.

RSS did not do anything at all so I don't dispute that. Yes, Jinnah played a role as a lawyer in British India but once again calling him a freedom fighter is not the same. From what I understand he was a brilliant lawyer.

He did not spent a single day in prison because he was a lawyer and a constitutionalist .He never adopted unlawful means to achieve his goal.He gave british a tough by remaining in the limits of law and constitution and this is the reason they were afraid of jinnah. Others were easily silenced by putting them in the jail because the british had something against them but that was not the case with jinnah.Jinnah was a very intelligent and clever man my friend :)

What is your definition of a freedom fighter?

Agree to all points. He was intelligent and clever as you said. I don't dispute for a minute that he was a nationalist. While I don't agree to all his views - I do believe he was a man of integrity.

Definition of freedom fighter - someone who not only acts within the ambit of the law but breaks the laws which are unjust. Like making salt. Like being prepared to spend time in jail for his beliefs. Like even resorting to violence if necessary against such laws. At the end of the day, Jinnah was for gradual constitutional reform and that makes him a reformist. I don't recollect reading about him fighting against the British - but am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

And you will indeed never recollect about him fighting against the british if you read biased material produced by right wing religious zealots in your country. But there are plenty of admirers of jinnah still after 70 years in india and there are several books produced by indian authors on this topic which are not biased.

That means he was smart , he did not just fight British but later the Hindi Fascists to create a Country for Muslims

Because he was smart enough to complete his objectives and avoid spending time in the slammer. If anything, that makes him even more impressive.

I think Mr. Jinnah had the similar compliance/role as what Mr. Rajeev Gandhi or Mr. Modi had in 1984 Sikh and 2002 Gujarat riots respectively.

Now read it from neutral some source.

https://www.sciencespo.fr/mass-violence-war-massacre-resistance/en/document/calcutta-riots-1946

Read the excerpt below.

After weeks of behind-the-scene negotiations, on July 29, 1946, at the prompting of its leader [Muhammad Ali Jinnah->article80], the Muslim League adopted a resolution rejecting the May 16th plan and called on Muslims throughout India to observe a “Direct Action Day” in protest on August 16.

FYI, the Direct action day was the immediate trigger for all Partition related Violance and it is very well documented by countless number of sources across the world. :(:(:(

Ah actually it wasn't, it was the bombing of a Muslim train by Sikh militants which was the first incident of partition violence. The BBC ran an hour long program during their partition series which showed this was clearly the first outburst of violence.
