Hindus and Muslims may have similar wedding celebrations, but there is no registration system for Hindu marriages in Pakistan.

The Indian parliament passed the Hindu Marriage Act in 1955 which made it mandatory for Hindu marriages to be registered in India. In Pakistan, the Hindu community has been demanding the same rights for decades, but to no avail.

Members of the Hindu community gave a two-month deadline to the government and threatened to hold a sit-in in front of the Parliament House in June if these demands were not met. They urged the media and concerned citizens to participate in a petition campaign as a token of support for the cause of poor Hindu women. But all to no avail.

Despite the Supreme Court’s suo motu ruling of November 23, 2010, no measure has been taken to introduce legal provisions for Hindu marriage rights by the Parliament. The assurances made by the Prime Minister have also not produced any results.

The assassination of minority affairs minister Shahbaz Bhatti further worsened the situation, especially for Hindus. Anita Vadhani, an O-Level student from Rahim Yar Khan says:

“Shahbaz was our last hope but his tragic end forced us to think seriously. We should either leave or migrate to another country.”

Shami Mai, a poor Hindu woman said:

“In case of separation or domestic violence, a Hindu woman cannot register a complaint in the government departments because she has no legal document to establish that the perpetrator was her husband.”

The shocking news about a Hindu MPA from Sindh migrating to India is another sign that the situation is worsening. PPP MNA Palwasha Behram blasted her own government in the National Assembly for the deafening silence of her fellow parliamentarians over the unfortunate fleeing of minorities from Pakistan.

But the injustice persists.

Sadly, many followers of the Hindu faith have left the country as a result of the injustices perpetrated towards them by those in power.

An Islamabad based journalist hailing from Sindh, Kapil Dev, says:

“Our community members are migrating to other countries because they think that no one accepts them in Pakistani society.”

The persecution of Hindus has become a regular feature in Pakistan, especially in Sindh. The Sikh community in Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa (KP) is also suffering from insecurity despite the power the progressive Awami National Party in that region.

Minorities’ rights are being denied and our parliamentarians and citizens are not concerned about their demands even though they have the power to change things.

Was this Jinnah’s dream for Pakistan?

the headlining is very wrong....jinah always said that fight gainst the hindus for freedom but if they are living with you....treat them as equal adn give the minorities equal rights...

.
i would like to state my views before it becomes a troll fest.

it is really sad to see GOP being concerned abt "plight" of muslims in india. it would be better if they concentrate on their own minorities.

if a govt is not aware of the issue then its still understandable but wat is dissapointing is the fact that almost each authority has been put in picture but still nothing has been done.

Jinnah's own grandfather was a Hindu but now hindus are not being given equal rights which Jinnah promised in his famous speech

mate no offence but it is same for sikhs in india...despite repeated promises of last several years the government in india has not implemented Anand Marraige Act for sikhs...even worse the british had the same act for sikhs during the rule,,this was implemented in somewhere 1900's...sikhs are not even recognized by our own country...
its a hard truth but the governement in india and pakistan is of majority of religion or votes...

Even Muslims don't have a place in this Pakistan anymore.

They only like certain sects and the rest are running around in fear of being declared Wajibul Qatal at any second.

If Jinnah was alive today, he would be the most hated figure for the Islamists and No.1 on the assasination list.

.
A few days back a few Pakistani members were boasting on a different thread how Pakistan has created the Anand Karaj act for Sikh weddings while India hasn't. This goes to show that the real aim behind creating the Anand Karaj act wasn't really taking care of the wishes of the Sikh minorities but to get a 'one-up' on India. Why cant the same Pakistan govt. create the Hindu Marriage act? Hindus are surely more in number than Sikhs in Pakistan.

i m not offended mate. i agree there are lot of flaws in india and being a realistic nationalist i m the first one to admit flaws of my country. but i think india has never projected themselves as champion of hindus in pakistan. i think u got my point.

secondly, can u give any references for studying the valuable info u just brought up. also i think blame should not only go to central govt but also state govt in punjab for not following up the issue. i am sure with akali dal at power some sort of progress should have been made.

I agree Jinnah would be a target and on the hit list, but where is the next Pakistani leader like Jinnah going to come from to save the country? Only Musharraf who is not perfect but he has learn't from his mistakes can do the job in my opinion.

Jinnah was known as Kafir-e-Azam and he was cursed to no end by the same people who are within the power circles of this country.

As for Musharraf, he had his chance and he could not achieve anything, things got worse after him.

I used to think that there is a large number of liberals too but I was clearly wrong.

We have superficial liberals who are selective in their liberal outlook, anything about religion, they take the same stance as extremists.

If there was a large number of liberals in this country we would not be in the situation we are in.
