LAHORE: While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have not managed to forge an electoral alliance, the JI apparently is not a silent spectator, at least in some of the constituencies when it comes to choosing between PTI and the PML-N.
The JI appears to be inclined towards the PTI, with some of its candidates discretely supporting PTI candidates in constituencies where the JI has little chances of winning.
A faction of JI sitting in the emerging PTI in Lahore would be a key factor for this hidden alliance, with growing chances of the JI offering total support to PTI on May 11.
It was initially thought that the JI would form an alliance with the PML-N. The JI had demanded sixty seats from PML-N, a demand the N-league did not accept. Then there were negotiations between PTI and JI. They too, failed.
Despite failed negotiations with the PTI, the Jamaat-e-Islami has silently withdrawn its national assembly candidates from Lahore and is merely going after the provincial assembly seats. JI candidates can be seen supporting PTI candidates on the national assembly seats, including Imran Khan from NA-122.
The inclusion of JI members in PTI paved the way for both parties to come closer. PTI Punjab president, Ijaz Chauhdry was once part of the Jamaat-e-Islami. Similarly, Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, Ahsan Rasheed and Hafiz Farhat Abbas (former Nazim of IJT accused of attacking Imran Khan at the PU) are now part of the PTI and are believed to be the elements bringing the two parties together.
Recent statements by JI chief, Syed Munawwar Hasan about Imran Khan also hint at the strengthening ties between the two parties, particularly in Punjab and Khyber Pakthunkhwa. Some analysts say the two parties overlap ideologically and through some of their members, arguing that they are likely to join forces in bringing down Nawaz Sharif in Punjab.
