The Jamaat-e-Islami has categorically refused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s request to withdraw its candidate in the NA-246 race in favour of the latter’s contestant.

“The ground was open for the PTI in the 2013 elections as the JI had boycotted the polls during midday and it received over 30,000 anti-MQM votes in the constituency,” JI information secretary Zahid Askari told The News on Monday.

“The PTI has no grassroots-level representation in the area and all its supporters are non-locals who do not have voting rights,” he added.

The JI and the PTI have fielded Rashid Naseem and Imran Ismail for the NA-246 by-polls respectively, scheduled to take place on April 23.

The PTI had reportedly approached the JI leadership and requested the latter to pull out its candidate from race so that the splitting of anti-MQM votes in the area could be prevented.

Both JI and the PTI are coalition partners in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

Askari said workforce was needed to win elections and the PTI lacked that.

“We are an organised party and have roots in the masses. It will only be a contest between the MQM and the JI and surely we will succeed.”

The office-bearer said the Memon community in Hussainabad had announced that it would support the JI.

Besides, he added, the traders in area were also fed up with paying extortion money to the MQM and were a silent majority who would vote for the JI if the polls were held in a peaceful and transparent manner.

“The presence of Rangers in the constituency is a positive sign as voters wouldn’t be intimidated and surely this is setback for the MQM.”

Askari said the JI was holding corner meetings and discussions with the constituents and had mostly received a positive response.

“We have pockets of supporters in many areas of the constituency since the 70s where nobody can challenge our vote bank.”

Siraj to address rally

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Ameer Siraj-ul-Haq will address a public gathering at the Shahra-e-Pakistan near Ayesha Manzil on April-12 in connection with the by-polls in NA-246 constituency.

JI Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman announced this at a press conference in Hussainabad area on Monday.

He informed the media that the JI Ameer will take a tour of the city on April 11 in connection with the party’s ongoing public contact campaign.

Earlier, JI candidate for NA-246 and Karachi’s Naib Ameer Rashid Naseem claimed that the city will witness the real change on April 23 if transparent and fair elections were held in the NA-246 constituency.

He contended that the people of the NA-246 will reject those who damaged the pleasant image of Karachi, adding “JI believes in politics of tolerance and leniency.”

The JI leader urged all the political parties to play their due role in promoting politics of peace and calmness.

He regretted that “Right now, the constituency is depicting a picture of battlefield and the area people are reviewing the entire situation and I am sure they will elect an honest and competent candidate from the constituency.”
