Can't replace the F-16

Better engine
More payload carrying capacity
More fuel / CFT

But these things come into action once you get Air superiority ? I mean a jet with more fuel and payload may not be a good option if it can't have air superiority. And for that role i think JF17 thunder comes into action. It seems to have better radar, avionics, range and bvr missiles(PL15) compared to the F16.

Guys there's a question that keeps bugging me | what if the Saab had won the contract to provide IAF 110 Gripen E. Considering their exceptional attributes - avionics and EW related, don't you think they would have really troubled PAF. Bear in mind that during the RED FLAG exercises they outperformed USAF Vipers and on several occasions sneaked up on F22s which is quite something. On top of that they have been designed in a way that they require minimal maintenance, can take off from a 600m runway and are meteor equipped too. Dont you think this would have helped alleviate IAF maintenance problems and a larger % of planes would have been available at any given time?! @messiach @Oscar @Quwa

What about the Pilots ?

Any source for your info?

if our 1980s fighter are still our top fighter, than its very alarming situation for paf in full fledged future war

You need to know that more than 2700 F-16s are still flying outta 4000 plus which passed through production line since 1980s. After 43 years of its introduction, F-16 is still frontline fighter jet of many Air Forces across globe, and will continuously remain in service globally beyond 2040s. Our block 52 vipers can remain in service for another 3 decades ahead. Its not alarming, but the best bang against the bucks for developing countries like us can get. Cheers.

I think Jf-17 block 3 will replace Mirage 3 and 5s. But f-16 will remain our front line fighter jet till next generation fighter jet for PAF is available. PAF is still negotiating to get used f-16s from different countries and 8 brand new F-16s from USA (lockheed martin)

Yes.
IAF 110 Gripen E. - they have been designed in a way that they require minimal maintenance, can take off from a 600m runway and are meteor equipped too. i agree.
enlarge the fuselage is even better.

RED FLAG events are complex events where a lot more comes into play in warfighting simulations than pure piloting skills - these events are about understanding the intricacies of the 'Cooperative Engagement Capability' in challenging environments and situations, and simulating different warfare tactics. Some of these simulations are so complex that only select-few countries are allowed to partake in them.

@gambit

Sneaked up on F-22s? :disagree:

In 2002 we had a well-defined set up, we knew where the enemy was, how it would react to our presence, where the threats were located etc.; in 2010, we faced a “border line” scenario with enemy elements embedded in friendly forces or civilian population, where CDE (Collateral Damage Estimation) was extremely important, where target VID (Visual IDentification) or EOID (Electro Optical IDentification) were the main success factors in the simulated air campaign.

Only New F16s can replace old ones.
NmPAF is in love with those birds for decades, i dont see something new.

JF-17 Block III will stretch boundaries of Pakistan's capability and capacity to new limits. You cannot thank Allah enough for enabling you to get a craft of this type, this early and this much capable - an aircraft which is 100% strings free and 100% yours to do whatever you want.
Yes, you have broken free from the yoke of US; but sooner PAC can bring more and more true R&D work that is key. Rightnow it is still in China; that is still a concern.

Will the JF-17 with an AESA radar and helmet mounted system and the PL-15 missile will replace the F-16 as the top fighter in the PAF?

The JF-17 with the block 3 package is cheaper to run and is a superior package to the PAF’s F-16 (not the USAF version) so if the block 3 package works (not a given) then yes it will replace the F-16 as the number 1.
Bhai.
These are fighter jets not race horses that there is one two or three . These are fighters and they have designated roles. These roles may or may not be interchangeable. So whereas the Thunders have their own roles so do the Mirages and F16s.

no.......Project Azm and later blocks of JF17 program will......It will start replacing them in 2030/32, If Pakistan doesnt get further updates on our F16 fleet. If we do, then their retirement time will only get delayed but they still will be retiring till 2035/40 anyways.

F-16 is much more capable

Pakistani Vipers don't have AESA radars, can't fire PL-15s, CM-400AKGs, have strings attached (outside of wartime situations), etc. Block 3 will be superior to Pakistan's fleet of Vipers unless they get upgraded to V standard.

proven platform

Thunders have carried out multiple successful bombing raids against militants, and have successfully engaged in multiple A2A encounters without any losses (taking out an Iranian UAV and a Bison). It is combat proven.

Its a long journey no doubts, but good news is that the journey has begun! Pakistan's problems after the indication of JF-17 have changed, and they are good problems to have. Previously Pakistan's problem was "we need a capable platform which we could use to... " to " we need indigenisation of this marvel...".
