@araz @Windjammer Any rumors or info on how things went at Anatolian Eagle? I've been hearing some rumors on Chinese sites but am dismissing them until I hear it from a more reliable source.

It held its own against Rafales. Pakistanis pilots pushed it to the very limits trying to score a deal with the Azerbaijianis. Do take it with a mountain of salt because some of the stuff posted by the hardcore Chinese military fans can make the Jai Hinds blush.

My dear, the actual exercise is to kick off today so too early to say anything, all else is just rumour mill.

Hard to believe but if it's true big props to PAF pilots and PAC/CAC engineers.

The Super 7/Sabre II project was completely different to the FC-1/JF-17 project. The Super 7/Sabre II was superceded by an all new agreement signed in the mid 90s between the Sharif administration and Chengdu/CATIC to design an all new design, not one based on a modified Mig-21F13 airframe. This was when Mikoyan was brought in as a consultant to provide assistance based on the data from the Mig-33 project, which later evolved into the FC-1/JF-17. There's Flight global news articles reporting this back in the 90s which I still remember reading.

The original article is archived somewhere on the internet, but the headline is as shown below from an article dated in 1995.


"CHENGDU AIRCRAFT (CAC) has teamed with Mikoyan MAPO to design and produce a new single-engine fighter to replace China's now defunct Super-7 project"


Ironically, the Super 7/Sabre II design essentially lived on in the form of the FTC-2000/JL-9 trainer.

And yes, the JF-17 is a statically neutral design, as I've mentioned before.

Not really. That article has not stood the test of time well and even at the time was based on hearsay, as admitted by the nature of the article itself.

Given the absence of any mention of Mikoyan and Gurevich along side the JF-17 today, we know that their involvement was eventually extremely limited. Nothing tangible of it exists at all. Just because they were hired as consultants doesn't mean a whole lot. Doesn't even mean that anything came out of it. In fact, how about we try to find a single credible/official source stating that the JF-17 is based off the Mig-33 design.

Then the picture below further discredits the accuracy of that flightglobal article.

Doesn't matter. My knowledge and acceptance of simple and obvious historical evidence will suffice on this.


There is an inherent flaw in 3rd gen aircraft design that prevents it from becoming a 4th gen airframe.

I have spend some good time reading about JF-17 thunder and watching its videos. One complaint that I had was, I never saw block 2s displayed and flying in an air show. Back in 2015 Paris air show we flew block 1 since block 2 wasn't even out yet. In 2017 Dubai air show we flew block 1 again despite block 2 being out and in service. In 2018 Zuhai airshow we again flew a block 1 or 2 I'm not sure! And in the latest 2019 Paris air show we again flew a block 1! 🤦‍♂️

Why they are hell bent to show block 1s only that too without any smoke oil and that too with landing gear open! 🤦‍♂️ PAF keep landing gear of the jet open so long during vertical climb for an unfreakin known reason! Why? When you are displaying vertical climb capabilities of your jet, why keep landing gear down and create so much extra drag? JF has excellent climb rate. And can climb vertically soon after launch. Tejas and Rafales need to build speed and keep going straight after coming off the run way before attempting to climb vertically. PAF needs to fix these things and take block 2s in the air shows.

One preferably uses dedicated aircraft for displays. Keeps the rest of the airframes away from undue structural stress.

Now either pictures posted online are being reused very randomly from older air shows. Or they really are only flying and displaying block 1s!? Can someone enlighten me on this? The other issue is PAF never uses aerobatic smoke oil on the wingtips of JF17! They have used it in F16s frequently but not the JFs? WHY?

Some unknown preference it seems. Has used it before. A Block II with smoke winders.
