What's new

JF-17 Thunder Multirole Fighter [Thread 7]

There is rumor of a Block-2+ variant, initially raised by Azerbaijan purchase speculation but now it is for PAF as well.

Since Block-3 will have a different engine and major internal changes which wont be feasible for upgrading on previous model. Block-2+ would be a block-2 JF-17 with an air cooled AESA radar which China claims is a bolt to bolt replacement as well as other electronic and minor upgrades.
The power consumption of the radar is low enough for existing system but with greatly enhanced capability.
For AA combat paired with updated, PL-10, SD-10s and PL-15s these will be able to stand their ground against even Rafaels. Also will be able to guide 4 missiles at a time so we might see Block-2+ with multi missile rails.
So even the existing fleet will pack more punch.

This is real and practical. Block 3 might be a generation ahead model so a block 2+ retrofitted model with AESA and future PL-15 and multi rack will be a very effective and deadly combination. All speculation and much will depend upon block 3 when it will be revealed.

There are no major internal changes. Yes, there is a new engine. Yes, it is under testing. Yes, it is specifically designed to replace jf17 existing engines as their life is about to end. More engines can not be procured from russia because of sanctions. So Pakistan is looking for a substitute in order to move away from this dependency. Hence that new engine is meant for all blocks (1,2,3)
There is no new engine. Pakistan has setup its facility to overhaul the RD-93. There are no sanctions that would preclude us buying more engines from Russia either. Stop spreading lies.

I think I agree with you. If there had been much disagreement PAF would not be talking of setting up RD93 overhaul facilities. This would be in keeping with their stated position. However minor upgrades to 93 could be on the cards.

Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) JF-17 Thunder kicked off on Saturday its practice drills in the French capital for the 53rd Paris Air Show to be held from 17th to 23rd of this month at Le Bourget Airport.

The PAF contingent comprising three JF-17 Thunder aircraft along with the air and ground crew are in Paris to participate in the mega event, reported Radio Pakistan.

The PAF demo team practiced a series of aerobatic drills and is fully prepared to woo the spectators in the largest air show of the world.

One PAF JF-17 aircraft would perform flying display on each day of the show while the other would be put on static display showcasing its lethal and sophisticated weaponry.

The first four days of the show will be reserved for trade visitors, while the next three days will be open to the general public.
The JF-17 aerial display is considered to be a major attraction of the show, providing an opportunity to showcase its cutting edge capabilities.

It would also allow potential customers to assess its abilities and help its promotion in the international market.

Organised by the French Aerospace Industries Association, the Paris Air Show is the largest aerospace-industry exhibition type air show in the world in terms of the number of exhibitors and size of exhibit space.

Article dates back to 2015. A lot of things changed in last 4 to 5 years. :)

That’s does not means other buyers will not adopt the mysterious ws-13

Same articles or different one complete version talked about in a months time bagaladesh trials of ws-13 based fc-1 at the same time

Engine would never be replaced note it
Engine will be replaced with two options RD93MA(most likely selected) or WS13. But it is strongly believe that RD93 will be selected due to investment of Pakistan in that engine.

Rd93ma is a version of rd93 and not a totally different engine there is commonality so initial investment in rd93 is not sunk cost ;) cannot say much about mysterious ws13 but Paf is not going for it based on past interviews
