Yes and No. Yes because you might need the power to take out high value battlefield targets quickly(which is why the Brimstone is there on the Tornado and the Hellfire arms many light attack jets).. but No because the Air Defence around an Indian battlegroup may be too hostile for such close in strikes.. and off course.. one by one attacks.

What is needed is a weapon by which multiple targets can be attacked at once. India has that in the CBU-105. Whose significance is lost upon most here in its deadly ability to essentially guarantee the devastation an entire Pakistani column from 25000ft and 20 km away.. well beyond the ranges of the only air defence missile kept by our short sighted brass.. the Anza.

Currently on the Mig-27 can carry that weapon but it will soon be operational with the MKIs and with a Future MMRCA(if and when it comes in). There is NOTHING comparable in Pakistan arsenal and the very nice exersize demonstrations we see of F-7's strafing or mirages bombing right over the target popping out a few flares now and then are a stark difference from what will happen in a shooting conflict.. where chances are that except the F-16s..and some Mirage...most of Pakistani Close air support will be shot down before it even reaches the troops.

Hijara cluster bomb...(Can he fitted with a guidance kit)

The problem is that the bomblets of Hijara themselves are not "smart", they are dispersed randomly over a target area. In CBU-105, the skeets (bomblets) are dispersed in a very even manner. Every skeet (bomblet) of every sub-munition is smart, and explodes only right above an armored vehicle.

Can be, is not nor will it be in my opinion.

Moreover, the weapon is not even close to the sophistication in submunitions that the CBU-105 has.

Some specs:

HIJARA

Description

Anti Armour Bomb, branded HIJARA is an effective, reliable and combat proven weapon system of IDS. It has been designed to destroy tanks and armoured vehicles. Also known as TSD-1 (Top Attack Sub Munitions Dispenser). The weapon has been designedior use with contemporary bomb rack configurations.

The bomb consists of 247 dart shaped bomblets contained in a dispenser, and can be carried by any aircraft capable of carrying 500 pounders with no special pilot training. The bomblets spread over an area of 2,500 sq meters and detonate on impact. Shaped warhead charge in the bomblets causes disabling damage to armour and soft targets.

The bomb consists of 247 dart shaped bomblets

Out of those 247, perhaps only 25 are actually going to cause some damage on a moving column. The effect of wind only makes it worse at the altitude to drop them from. The Gulf War and Operation Allied Force are testament to the inaccuracies of unguided munition of which cluster weapons are the worst.

The CBU-105 was made to essentially remedy these shortcomings. Without guided munitions, the success rate for a CAS mission with cluster munitions is around 15%.

@Oscar

May be PAF don't have comparable weapon like CBU-105 but PA does possess MBRLs with different kind of warheads. Rockets with dispensing anti Armour munitions and landmines are very effective and cost effective. Able to plug a huge area in a very short time. Solvo of such rockets on an advancing armored columns is very destructive. Different approach, different strategy by Pakistan.. who knows :-)

The IA possess similar systems. The issue with unguided is that they done know where to go and where to hit. So no innovative approach if all you are doing is getting equipment to fight the last war... when your opponent is going to fight in the 21st century.

It is quite likely.. as most of the upgrades to Block-2 are software and avionics based. Even the refuelling probe can be retrofitted.

nope, thats for us..
i was under the impression something more significant changes will be made than this.. (still waiting with that belief)

for such a minimum changes there is no need to take so much time..
manufacturing could have continued in the same rate..

That was a very incorrect impression. The changes were more than just avionics and software. The wing assembly is also being strengthen to carry a greater load which means a testing time.

You should put things in their real context and lower the odds, since Pakistan population is also the tenth of that of India, they are in par with each other proportionally speaking.

For now the whole SU-35 MKI fleet is grounded. Isn't GOD great?
God is always great whether or not Russian MKI's are flying or not.

What kind of changes r being made in avionics? Are we installing AESA on JFT block 2????
