5 th generation will not kill all the previous generation of fighter jets at once..
the transition is a time taking process.
this is why you can see so many of 4+ generation plaes being developde to date..

I think if we are looking at fighter jets we should never look beyond America, Russia (Sukhoi only), France, Sweden and China for state of the art...

You would be surprised how much British Junk was thrown onto us during the early years of the PAF.. take the supermarine attacker.. which is undoubtedly the worst Jet aircraft ever made.
At one time we were encouraged to buy the Bristol Brabazon..

Typhoon is a good plane but ten years late.Should have been inducted in 2000.Now it's too late.They're still developing it and other nations are building up 5th Gen Fighters now.Money Wasted.

I have a feeling that the European has been intentionally not to develop 5G fighters. If they don't have 5G fighter, USA has to get in the scene first and clear enemy's resistance before European planes come into picture. i.e. Let the American do the danger and dirty job first. Afterall, Europe faces no 5G opponent in the foreseeable future. Unlike China, she has to prepare for confrontation with USA. It is the Indian money to keep the Russia's 5G program. Otherwise, even Russia does not willing to spend heavy amount on 5G bird.

i think onus on future upgrades of thunder lies with pakistan.. probably because china is not that depandant on thunder as pakistan. so pak needs to be a foot ahead to make thunder worth having it.

JFT/FC1 is the corner-stone of china's military aircraft export drive - pls dont fret over it - its worth having the JFT/FC1 - thanks for your comment though!

jf-17's genesis happened due to pakistan's quest for a affordable string free modern fighter, which they have achieved by jointly collaborating with china in r&d and start manufacturing them locally .It is truly a rational and prudent decision by paf will prove its worth in future more by gradual upgrade and modification .

I was doing budgetary planning questions so one thing came in my mind the next 5 year plan of PAF.

In the period of 2010-2015 PAF must add 150 new planes to fleet and its very much possible.

PAF defence budget for equipment purchase combined for next 5 year is minimum 6 Bil$.

100 JF-17 block II @25mil each= 2.5bil$
36 FC-20 @40mil each= 1.4Bil$
14 F-16 52+ @80mil each= 1.2Bil$
Total
150 new aircrafts.
Still 1bil$ left can be use for air defence, exercises and drones.
If JF-17 gets 4.5gen+ upgrade it will definitely be the game changer.

i think we should stop buying f-16 any more and spend these 1.2Bn USD on j-10..to get around 65 j-10 till 2014..

j-10B wil be much more advance then f-16 block 52

36 is only the initial delivery between 2014-2015, dozens more likely orders afterwards!

So we could well see 65 FC-20s.

radar selection is unknown..
