JF-17 Block-3 -- Updates, News & Discussion

Most interesting aspect is the claim that a whole batch is being produced, not just a prototype.

And quite disheartening that AESA may not be there from the get go :( and may be added later.
Read the article again, it doesnt say it will be added later, it says airframe will be manufactured before hand so that when Aesa is ready for integration, delivery could be ensured without any delays. This means Aesa will be there from the getgo.

Here is what it says:

"Wei said this probably means while the upgrades like the new AESA radar are still in development, the airframe, which remains roughly the same, can be manufactured without waiting.

Once new developments are complete, they can be fitted on the airframe very fast, ensuring a quick delivery time, Wei said."

This implies that they are not letting AESA development delay batch production, but it doesnt mean the AESA will be ready when the first batch is made. I hope you are right, but article suggests otherwise.

Focus on the sentence "ensuring quick delivery time". The article is saying that airframes would be manufactured before hand so that when Aesa is ready, there are no further delays to manufacture airframe. The jets which will roll of the production line will have Aesa.

Better develop some S400 counter measures too now, as the JF17s will be facing them in the near future.

You just saw a test of un-nammed missile. Fire 20s of those towards a launcher and either have it exhaust its missiles defending itself, and when it misses one, have itself evaporated.

JF-17 warplane to be fitted with electronically scanned array radar

Pakistan and China plan to upgrade their jointly- produced JF-17 Thunder fighter jet to enhance "informatised warfare" its capability and weapons for an effectively defence.

Yang Wei, a Chinese legislator and chief designer of the China-Pakistan co-developed fighter jet was reported to have said that "the development and production of the JF-17 Block 3 are underway."

According to a report of China Aviation News. Wei Dongxu, a Beijing-based military analyst told Global Times that the JF-17 Block 3 is likely to be fitted with an active electronically scanned array radar, which can gather more information in combat, enabling the fighter jet to engage from a farther range and attack multiple targets at the same time. A helmet-mounted display and sight system could also allow pilots to aim whatever he sees.

Pakistan, the main user of the JF-17, could further share information between the fighter and other platforms taking advantage of the whole combat system to effectively defend against strong opponents, Wei said.

With the new upgrade, the JF-17 Block 3 will match an improved version of the F-16 fighter jet, he added. JF-17, or the FC-1, is a single-engine multi-role light fighter jet jointly developed by China and Pakistan for export.

When asked about which countries have inquired about the JF-17 Block 3, Yang said "A lot of countries have come to buy. You sign [a contract for the JF-17], you benefit."

The JF-17 is often described by its manufacturer and military observers as an advanced but also cost-effective fighter. It is currently contending with India's Tejas and South Korea's FA-50 in Malaysia's new fighter jet purchase plan, with the JF-17 being the most competitive option, Wei said.

A JF-17 fighter jet attached to the Pakistan Air Force flies towards the designated airspace during an air-to-ground offensive operation drill conducted by two Chinese JH-7 fighter bombers and two Pakistani JF-17 fighter jets on Sept. 20, 2017, which is part of the "Shaheen VI " joint training exercise launched by the air forces of China and Pakistan.

Myanmar and Nigeria have reportedly purchased the Chinese-Pakistani warplane.

It has information about,.. JF-17 Block 3 vs Rafale , by Blackuday .
Where it show that it will be hard for JF-17 B3 to do dogfight with Rafale (Indian).

Kindly provide any positive information if after JF-17 Block3 ,completion, China will provide following as said in above link??
By mid 2020’s, China may provide Pakistan with their low cost Fifth Generation fighter, the J-31 or perhaps the 2–3 squadrons of the state of the art J-20 Stealth Fighter as a force multiplier.

.
Parallel development/Production, it's nothing new that is exactly how Block 1 was developed/produced after French did what they do best.

Maybe they don't get into WVR but BVRAAM fight? I don't think JF-17 BLK3 with AESA will be at disadvantage against Rafale.

In air combat of today, the emphasis has shifted to the avionics (including Radar & EW) and the employment of advanced BVR AAMs and HOBS WVR AAMs + HMD. The latter compensates for any disadvantage in maneuverability. The F-35 is a prime example. It is an avionics and stealth wise marvel of technology. Whatever it lacks in maneuverability (if any : depending on the adversary), it makes up with its advanced HMDS and AIM-9X HOBS missiles.

The F-35 example is just to prove a point. Yes the JF-17 Block-3 will be at a disadvantage in WVR combat against the Rafale F3. But that disadvantage will be reduced to the extent of the difference in the HMD and HOBS missiles of both aircrafts. I am hopeful that the difference will be overcome further with the skill and training of our pilots.

Just my two cents.

In a Rafael Vs JF-17 Blk-2/3 scenario it will be. Blk-2s will likely be upgraded with air cooled AESAs to 2+ standard.

Meteor Vs PL-15
Mica Vs PL-10

So both will be a good match and would depend on tactics employed. So ultimately the man behind the machine will matter more.

However ordering a mere 36 units and the consistent shortcomings of InAF aircraft in precision ground attack. Remember only Mirage 2000 was able to achieve results in Kargil. It will be very likely that Rafaels will be tasked with ground attack while upgraded Su-30MKIs will be their air superiority assets.

One advantage PAF will have is that MBDA has refused MICA for other InAF jets. LCA or SU-30MKI willl not get them unless a EU radar selected which is not happening.

The "wei" who is saying all this is not Yang Wei who is the chief designer but actually Wei Dongxu who is an analyst. One should keep that in mind while drawing any conclusions.

And this analyst is analyzing the following words from the chief designer "Yang said that the development and batch production for the JF-17 Block 3 are going simultaneously, thanks to the broad experience." , Wei the analyst is concluding that this refers to the radar, but that is his opinion. Notice the difference between "Yang says" and "Wei says".
