JF-17 Block-3 -- Updates, News & Discussion

It can be useful as a pod for certain special scenarios. One such scenario that comes to mind is if it is utilized for a bombing mission. A fighter jet configured in ground role can fly low to avoid radar detection...and instead of using its radar can use the pod(like the sniper pod) for target identification and weapons' guidance to said target. Not using the jet's own radar, maintaining radio silence, and flying low...all of this can help lower the chances of aircraft being detected by enemy ground radars...all the while the aircraft is able to carry out its mission.
For a bombing mission in enemy area whether you switch on your radar or not enemy radar will be monitoring you (unless you are a stealth aircraft) so it immaterial.

Read my post again...it specifies an EXACT scenario. Enemy radar detection can be evaded in certain(few) scenarios even by non stealth aircrafts.

WS-13IPE engine for FC-31 carrier-based fighter could be mass-produced in 2020

One design plan of WS-13 engine modification

Guizhou Liyang Aero Engine Co., Ltd. affiliated to China Aviation Engine Corporation posted the company’s key tasks in 2020 recently, one of which is the implementation of small-batch production of a new aircraft engine.

The outside world generally believes that this new engine is probably WS-13IPE (thrust-enhanced type), which mainly adds thrust on the basis of WS-13 engine in order to adapt to performance upgrade and improvement of fighters.

JF-17 Block-III

WS-13 is a medium-thrust turbofan engine developed by the Liyang company based on Russian RD-93 engine. It was originally planned for JF-17/ FC-1 fighter. However, before its successful development, the Pakistan Air Force had selected RD-93 turbofan engine for JF-17 fighter and established an overhaul line. After evaluation, the Pakistani side thought that the performance of WS-13 is similar to that of the RD-93 engine. And the entire logistics support system would almost be overturned and it would cost too much to replace the engines. Therefore, Pakistan decided to continue to use the RD-93 engine.

However, Liyang company did not abandon WS-13 in this regard, and continued to improve and increase the engine’s thrust. Liyang company believed that JF-17 Block-III fighters would undergo major changes, and will use new equipment such as source phased array radar and integrated electronic warfare systems. And the weight of the aircraft would definitely increase significantly compared to the first and second batches. So the need for a larger thrust engine is an opportunity for WS-13 engine.

FC-31

Besides, it was reported that FC-31 fighter was equipped with WS-13 engine with an afterburning thrust less than 9 tons, which is far from sufficient.

FC-31 fighter was originally planned to use a fourth-generation homemade turbofan engine, but this engine has just been developed, and it will take some time for the design to be finalized and mass-produced.

Liyang company decided to improve the thrust of the WS-13 engine as a transition for FC-31 fighter. The WS-13IPE thrust- enhanced engine adopts a relatively conservative scheme and retains the original four-stage fan, but the blades are swept forward to delay the airflow separation. This increases the fan speed and allows the engine to take in more air, thereby increasing the engine thrust.

After the improvement, the thrust of WS-13IPE engine could be over 9 tons, which can be used for JF-17 Block-III and can also meet the initial needs of JC-31 stealth fighters, especially if JC-31 is chosen as the carrier-based fighter, which would need engines with a higher thrust to carry its increased weight.
@LKJ86 @Deino How credible is this site?

see the problem is, THE BEST WESTERN EQUIPMENT ISNT AVAILABLE TO PAF!

now if you still dont understand then FI AMANILLAH!
Indra EW equipment already in use with JF 17 block2 meanwhile Leonardo S.p.A. has been in continuous liaison with Pak for induction of it's gadgets in block 3. Turkish equipment may also be considered as Western. However US tech looks to be out of reach for Pak.
The main problem lies with budget and opportunity costs.

IMO simply unreliable.
The news are released by Guizhou Liyang Aero Engine Co., Ltd. affiliated to China Aviation Engine Corporation from their official website about production of this engine. It con-incident with the recent debut of Blk 3. To claim is as unreliable is a not a correct statement.

It is also thru the statement release by Jiangnan shipyard that we know 001 aircraft carrier and 075 LHD are being built before photo leaked of its construction to confirm it. Are u going to deny it?

I have always considered WS-13 to be a dark horse which would upset analysts' predictions someday. At 9500 Kgf, it is not something that can be dismissed easily. The only question would be about its longer term reliability.

It is not a ditto copy of RD-93 though. It has a higher bypass ratio, & therefore it would probably offer marginally better economy in most scenarios.

The only thing I would like to know is how much dry thrust it can provide.

It is not about the news but about the whole article piece being released by the concerned organization or the Block 3 and last para of FC-31 was just an analysis by the editor

Do not trust every opinion of Deino.

That's for sure but I beg to differ - or at least in that way I read his question - since I replied to the question on how reliable https://www.china-arms.com/ as a source is .... anyway the fact that Guizhou Liyang Aero Engine Co., Ltd. itself posted this is indeed new.

As such thanks for the correction and sorry for my averhasted post.

I don’t find @Deino ”unreliable” simple because of his experience of coming across all this since years. Off course you and @LKJ86 are as well as reliable or even more sometimes.

The name of website “China-arms” has a US/International feeling instead of being chinese operated so i gave it a second thought. Off course, the press statement would be there as you earlier mentioned, but still i thought the Thunder and last FC-31 part was hypothetical but Thunder part is nothing secret as thunder has had flights in WS-13.

Interested to know the specs of WS-IPE and how it fairs with P&W F-135 (F-35’s engine)

OK DUDE, if thats what helps you sleep.

Hi,

If things had worked out well in the initial stages---the JF17 might have had a French power plant as well---.

Now what do my comments have to do 'with sleep'---.

remember one thing---you cannot see your face in boiling water---.

You both are arguing baselessly.

Vixen being a western radar was also one of the top contenders for Block 3 AESA upgrade so the “Western” label has no basis when it comes to thunder unless the supplier is trusted.

Hi,

Trust is a part of dealing and mutual understanding---.

Would love to hear the inside story about what happened with Vixen 'no deal'.
