It is a decent jet and the combination low-medium-high (jf17,J10,F16block52) are very difficult to counter. Certainly in bigger numbers. Same can be said about trying to counter 200 MKI's. So I agree that from oldies like F7p/PG, A5, F6 towards this can be seen as not very nice for India. It doesn't say that JF17 is superduper.

JF17 is currently under eveluation by them, they may induct it but only in small numbers as they are also locally producing J11B and J10!
anway i wish that the chines do go for threee to five squadrons of JF17 replacing some of there old aircrafts!

The topic of JF17 induction in PLAAF has been discussed to death in various fora. There is no satisfactory answer. The reason is Thunder in its present configuration does not fulfill the inclusion criteria in PLAAF philosophy. How things progress with its 2nd and 3rd tranches is for anyone to guess.
There has been talk of inducting JF17 as a ground attack aircraft in due course, but it is all up in the air as far as I am concerned. It must be understood that JF17 was an aircraft designed for PAF and for export. Although there was an initial commitment on the part of the chinese that they would buy 150 platforms, in view of PAF's satisfaction and upgrade of requirement to 250+units, they might not be pushed to comply with the terms of the contract.
The future of JF17 lies with what PAF makes out of it. Although current developments are being kept under a strict cloak of secrecy, the signs are that it will be a nice little number, which will give any fighter in its category a run for its money. However a lot of work needs to be done and is being done as we speak. So as they say"you aint seen nuthin' yet!!".

As far as PAF is concerned their big daddy will be the AMRAAM equipped F16s in post 2011

I beg to differ. PAFs frontline fighter will be the FC-20.

Dear All, let's please look at this article in a rational manner. The IAF was simply stating that newer more potent platforms are becoming available. More importantly, it was a very smart way of pushing along additional funding requests.

The IAF still is and will be a very potent force with all the Su-30s and the new 5th generation stealth planes in its inventory in the next few years. Thanks!

That the JF17 Thunder is a poor mans F16/52.

Its a quantum leap from where PAF is today ie 350 F7/MIRAGE3/5

Its a fantastic way to replace so many obselete non BVR fighters with a low cost meduim tech multi role fighter.

low cost because as $15m each its 30% the cost of most single engined modern fighters like Gripen $50m Mirage2000 & F16/52 AS WELL.

Meduim tech because it carries chinease weapons and standard mechanical scanning radar not pesa or aesa or any western weapons. But stil has other features like data linking and hms.

Should india be worried no because PAF has only 10-14 Thunders today...
and India has 125 su30mki already rising to 272 by 2015.
