Jehad is 'not mandatory' in Kashmir, says Sufi Mohammad

A hardline Pakistani cleric said jehad is "not mandatory" in the Indian state as people there are not demanding Sharia.

Islamabad: Contradicting militant groups' claim that they were engaged in 'jehad' in Kashmir, a hardline Pakistani cleric, who brokered a peace deal between Taliban and NWFP government, has said jehad is "not mandatory" in the Indian state as people there are not demanding Sharia.
Hardline cleric Sufi Mohammad, the chief of the banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Sharia Muhammadi, said the Kashmiris are demanding a state and not Sharia or Islamic law. "Therefore, jehad is not mandatory in Kashmir."

"Today there is no place in the world where 'jehad bil qataal' (holy war) is taking place," Muhammad said. He said that Sharia prohibited the stopping of vices through the use of force.

He also said democracy is 'kufar' (infidelity) and

backing democratic forces is useless. "Even I do not offer prayers under pro-democracy people," the cleric said.

Former Jamaat-e-Islami chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Fazlur Rehman are searching for Sharia in democracy, he claimed.

Muhammad said women are not allowed to go out of their homes except to perform Haj or the pilgrimage to Mecca. There is no need to seek a wife's permission for jehad or holy war.

He was also of the opinion that there is no Islamic Sharia system in Saudi Arabia or Iran.

I wonder what does he mean by this. He is surely enjoying his 2 minutes of fame.

Indians don't want to comment on this because this statement directly says hey indians don't worry you and us are on the same team our common enemy is pakistan...

where are you fateh, peaceful indian,toxic-puss and all the rest....???

Ya he can say any thing he want, its just a stunt to show "Hey see am a nice guy and am against violance":disagree: so that he can gain some sympathy thats it. No one here give a crap for what he says if am not worng.

As far as regarding the so called "Jehad in Kashmir" is concerned, they can continue for as long as they want to. Its clear until violance contunies Indian Troops are going to stay there, and there is nothing anyone can do about that.

The day the violance stops definately GOI would consider reducing the number of troops in the region so that Normality can prevail on the region and this would further inprove relation between India and Pakistan for sure.

Here I come - I chose to keep out of this mostly due to apathy. I simply don't care what that mullah says. But I had read another article on the same story. I am getting the impression that Pakistani media played around with Sufi's words to make him sound pro-India. Here is that article. I would highlight the opening excerpts, though I encourage you to read entire article.

Pak Taliban not for capturing Indian Kashmir, for eminence of Islam: Sufi Muhammad

New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): The Pakistani Taliban is not interested in marching into Indian-held Kashmir to establish its writ, but very determined to ensure the pre-eminence of Islam wherever possible, said Tehreek- e-Nifaz-e- Sharia Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad.

In his first ever interview to a magazine in India and outside Pakistan, Sufi Muhammad when asked whether the Taliban would march into Jammu and Kashmir after establishing control in the Malakand Agency and other adjoining areas in Pakistan, said: “Our struggle is for the eminence of Islam not for getting a piece of land.”

It doesn't seem to me that he ever talked about 'jehad'. All he is talking about is Taliban themselves trying to take over Indian Kashmir. He definitely doesn't want to commit a grave mistake of attacking Indian territory. They are simply no match with us militarily. And - they are also not going to get any local support here, as they enjoy in Pakistan. So in short, I don't see any 'pro-Indian' comments here. You need more than that to prove that he works for India.

Sufi Mohommed is fighting to establish the writ of Sharia in Pakistan. Reading between the lines, if Democracy is 'Kufar', then we can assume he implies that Pakistani democracy is not aligned with his brand of Islam. Therefore, a fissure, and a source of conflict !

Indians should be happy with his statement on Kashmir. For one, the talibans under his command will keep the fighting localised. Two, it gives a newer definition of the war in Kashmir.
