Jeddah flooded once again (26/1/2011)

JEDDAH: Jeddah Gov. Prince Mishaal bin Majed said Wednesday that all measures have been taken to bring things in the city back to normal within 24 hours. "We haven't received any reports of death as a result of Wednesday's flash floods," he said.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the civil defense committee, Prince Mishaal said emergency assistance would give given to the flood victims. "Panels have been set up to assess damages and meet requirements of those affected by the floods," he said.

He urged Saudis and expatriates to cooperate with government departments and extend volunteer services to deal with the situation caused by unprecedented rains. He instructed civil defense officials to keep him updated about developments after every six hours.

"We'll provide shelter to everyone who deserves shelter and panels have started providing accommodation for flood victims," Prince Mishaal said and urged the public to show restraint and follow safety instructions.

Civil defense officers have rescued 85 people using helicopters and 200 others using boats, the prince said, adding that four helicopters are in the sky to monitor flooding and support rescue operation.

Meanwhile, the civil defense has urged the public to keep away from inundated areas and stay at home as far as possible during heavy rains. Brig. Abdullah Jeddawi, director of the department, said civil defense officers have been deployed in flood-hit areas such as Quwaizah, Um Al-Khair, Obaid, Ajwad, Samir and Towfik. "Officers in 32 civil defense centers have been readied to face any eventualities," he said.

Hello Last Hope.

I do not want to edit/delete your post rather I would like it you do it yourself.

Your concerns are well-grounded but could we not have doomsday calls. We are trying to minimise any reference, religious or otherwise, that can turn into something which it was not intended to be.

People are affected by the floods and would consider such statements insensitive.

Please edit/delete your post and hopefully you'll understand the larger context here,

Thanks!

E.

Saw it in Urdu news today, that due to floods in Jeddah, the zoos is hit and the animals are roaming the streets!
Is it true?
Its really horrible, when some where enjoying the rain without knowing how deadly and devasing it would be.
As it is in newspaper, I recommend all jeddans here to stay in there home, you dont know what wild animal you may encounter, which may include snakes, lions and tigers as well.

If you have some links on the news, please update me as Arabnews hasent got anything there.

There are lot of areas badly effected, still under water, but mostly it is alright now, and people who go to work in suburbs are still missing :(

Hey, since you are in Riyadh, tell me about Princess Nourah University Accident, Local news papers like Arab news etc reported 3 people died.. But from independent sources we hear people are still underneath the rubble and almost 300* labors died?

Any info?
I have some pics its devastating :frown:

Yeah arab news mentioned 3 whereas Jang news mentioned around 50.
I live near city center, and the area is mostly occupied with Laboureres and they told my dad that they all are sure at least 100 are dead and countless injures when the roof collapsed.
Horrible.
