Jayalalithaa promises creation of separate Tamil Eelam for Sri Lankan Tamils

Chennai, April 23: Ahead of Tamil Nadu elections AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa today assured to take steps for creation of separate Tamil Eelam for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees. While addressing a huge crowd, Jayalalitha said, “I have demanded dual citizenship for the refugees, so that they can get jobs easily”.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state further said, “I have continuously demanded an independent international investigation on the people who committed genocide. Will take steps for creation of separate Tamil Eelam for Sri Lankan Tamils where they can live an independent and respectable life.

The statement was issued during a public meeting by Jayalalitha while she was campaigning in Tiruchy today. Earlier Jayalalitha had moved a resolution in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly House, stating that there should be an impartial, international and independent probe for the alleged war crimes and genocides faced by Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka.

She said, “Noting that Sri Lankan Tamils have for long been living in and outside camps in Tamil Nadu”. The AIADMK chief also promised her regime was giving them all facilities.

Tamil Eelam is a proposed independent state that Tamil speaking community in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan diaspora living in India aspire to create in India and as well as eastern part of Sri Lanka.

Jayalalitha also demanded for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka, an international probe against ‘war crimes’ and another related to a referendum among Tamils on the question of a separate Eelam.

Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa who took up the issue at her rally in Tiruchy alleged that the UPA government in which the DMK was a constituency started training the Lankan army in 2008 and provided arms and radars with the full knowledge of Karunanidhi, who was the then Chief Minister.


During the military offensive, no fire zones and hospitals were shelled and a genocide was carried out, she accused. She also cited an interview by Northern Provincial Council member Anandhi Sasidharan that LTTE members surrendered following an assurance by DMK chief Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and those who surrendered were either killed or missing.

Karunanidhi, who used to give quick rebuttals have chosen to remain silent on the issue although he has started his election campaign on Saturday. Party treasurer M.K. Stalin too has not reacted, but he is not known to speak on major political issues and prefers to confine himself to bread and butter matters.

The DMK could be silent as it does not want the Lankan issue to occupy the centrestage in the Assembly poll campaign.
