SIRAJGANJ: Former President and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Tuesday said his party would contest in the next parliamentary elections alone. "Jatiya Party will contest for 300 seats in the upcoming general elections. We have finalised candidates for 200 seats while 100 others are under process," he said while addressing a roadside rally at Hatikumrul crossing in Sirajganj while leading a road march towards Teesta Barrage at Dalia in Nilphamari. Sirajganj unit of JP, a partner of the Awami League-led grand alliance government, organised the rally.
Among others, JP Secretary General ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, party presidium member Kazi Zafor Ahmed, general secretary of Sirajganj district unit of JP Gazi Mirza Faruk Ahmed spoke.
The JP chief also urged people to forge unity to ensure the overall development of the country.
UNB adds: Jatiya Party, a component of Al led grand alliance government, on Tuesday launched the long march to Teesta Barrange in Nilphamari with a call for forging national unity for realizing the due share of waters of the Teesta River.
The JP chairman H M Ershad accompanied by the central leaders addressed wayside meetings at Gazipur, Sirajganj and Bogra before reaching Rangpur late Tuesday night where he may stay overnight. He will hold a public meeting at Rangpur Zilla School ground on Wednesday morning before resuming the long march and reach Teesta Barrage, about 15km away from the border, in the afternoon.
Addressing the wayside meetings the former president said the Teesta Barrage was built during his rule 22 years ago. But waters of the river were not available at the barrage during the dry season in the absence of water sharing agreement with India.
He called upon India to give the due share of waters of all the common rivers, including Teesta.
He said the Teesta Barrage was built with a projection of irrigating about five lakh hectares in Bogra, Rangpur and Dinajour districts.
Speaking about the domestic politics Ershad viewed that the country is heading to a serious crisis. He urged all political parties to avoid conflicts.
