Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] on Friday offered India's [ Images ] readiness to help Japan [ Images ] hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami, saying, "Our resources are at your disposal."

"India stands in full solidarity with the government and people of Japan at this hour," he said in a letter to his Japanese counterpart Naoto Kan. Singh said, "We are ready to help Japan in any way required and our resources are at your disposal."

He said he was shocked to learn about the devastating quake that has hit the coast of Japan causing huge damage to life and property. He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people who have suffered or lost their near and dear ones in the disaster.

Noting that there were no reports of any casualties among the approximately 25,000-strong Indian community in Japan which is concentrated in the Kanto and Kansai regions, the ministry of external affairs said, "Our embassy in Tokyo and consulate in Osaka are in touch with community members and verifying the situation on the ground."

"India conveys its sympathies to the government and people of Japan who have been affected by the severe earthquake and tsunami that hit parts of the country on Friday afternoon. We are saddened by the loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure," said a spokesperson.

"Our Embassy in Tokyo and Consulate in Osaka are in touch with community members and verifying the situation on the ground," he added.

The MEA said that it is monitoring the situation closely and would take all necessary steps required as per exigencies. A control room has been established in the Indian Embassy in Tokyo which can be contacted on phone numbers 00813 32622391 to 97.

Ready to extend all possible help immediately to Japan, reeling under the devastation caused by the massive earthquake and Tsunami, India is sending first plane-load of blankets today.

"India sending wool good quality blankets for the people of Sendai and others affected by Japan quake. 1st plane load being readied," Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao tweeted.

"Discussed this with Jap (Japanese) Amb (Ambassador) in Delhi and we felt this was most useful and needed item given cold weather conditions in affected areas," she said.

MEA officials also said that governments of Haryana and Punjab are also helping in procuring large quantity of woollen blankets as the weather is very cold there.

Rao is in constant touch with Indian embassy officials and also Japanese officials here regarding their requirements.

"All possible help will be extended immediately," they said.

Japan was hit by one of the worst-ever earthquake causing giant Tsunami waves on Friday and according to some news-media estimates, the death toll ranged between 1,300 and 1,700, and could rise sharply. In the port town of Minamisanriku, nearly 10,000 people were unaccounted for, according to the public broadcaster NHK.

India is on Sunday sending its first relief plane to Japan, which has been devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami killing thousands of people, Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao tweeted.

"India sending wool, good quality blankets for the people of Sendai and others affected by Japan quake. 1st plane load being readied," Rao tweeted.

"Discussed this with Jap (Japanese) Amb (Ambassador) in Delhi and we felt this was most useful and needed item given cold weather conditions in affected areas," she added.

She has also been responding to queries by anxious people whose relatives and friends are in Japan.

The devastating 9-magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami that hit northeastern Japan on Friday afternoon has already claimed thousands of lives and toll is expected to cross 10,000, according to officials.

Authorities scrambled on Sunday to minimise the effects of possible radiation leaks from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
