Japans warns West against lifting China arms embargo

completed agreed. remember the 80's when several of our major projects such as Y-10 and supercomputer got scrapped because some incompetent political leaders believed the West was the best.

Same thing is happening now with the civilian nuclear industry. China basically has dismantled its entire nuclear power-generation R&D program in favor of foreign designs. We're one of the earliest nuclear powers in the world and now our civilian nuclear technology is behind even that of India.

Just early this week the former Chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation was sentenced to life imprisonment. Officially it's for a 6 million Yuan corruption case but people works in the industry think he is actually a French spy. Under his leadership China National Nuclear Corporation cut almost all funding to Chinese indigenous civilian nuclear R&D in favor of 'cooperation' with foreign suppliers.

I don't even dare to imagine the harm that's going to be done to China if the U.S and EU lift their arms embargo. Earlier some officers in PLAAF were advocating importing more SU-30s from Russia. Later they're founded to be on the pay roll of the Russians and were executed. Can you imagine what will happen if France, the master of arms trade bribery, is allowed to do business with China?

Going back to the case of civilian nuclear program, India overtook China because they were under sanctions for their nuclear tests and we can 'cooperate' with the West on civilian nuclear projects.

But don't worry. Thanks to Mr.Bush now Western suppilers will have the chance to 'cooperate' with India and destroy India's own nuclear industry.

Maybe the best thing China can do is to execute Liu Xiaobo and get the West to ban all arms sales to China for the rest of the life of the universe, and get them to ban all civilian nuclear cooperations with China too!

This is pretty disconcerting... Do you have more details or is it more or less hearsay.

I agree with you on the effects of embargo btw.

The news for Kang Rixin's life sentence is out on all major news outlets, say

¿µÈÕÐÂÊÜ»ß660Íò Ò»Éó±»ÅÐÎÞÆÚ_ÍøÒ×ÐÂÎÅÖÐÐÄ

Of course the French spy part is not going to be revealed for obvious political reasons. So we may never know the truth of it.

But if you think the manner he refused to fund our own fundamental research and how he signed up with the French to buy their reactors without any form of ToT. Then I think the industry rumors about him being a French spy is pretty credible.

Sigh. It's likely that this corruption charge is a mask for his French connection. Spy is too a strong word here and perhaps Greedy French bribe taker is a better term. Still the sentence was too light for jeopardizing the nation's critical interest, they should have shot him and save the tax payers the money.

and somehow I doubt they got all of his ill gotten gains, when they confiscated his assets.

I just went back and checked BBC's report on Kang's arrest

BBC News - Beijing airport ex-head executed

The amounts are small compared to the $260m allegedly squandered by another senior official, Kang Rixin, the general manager of China's National Nuclear Corporation.

He is accused of trading money earmarked for the construction of three nuclear plants and trading it on the stock exchange, with heavy losses, says the BBC's Chris Hogg in Shanghai.

He is also accused of accepting bribes from a foreign company that wanted to build nuclear power stations in China.

He can pay for his jail term with some of that 6 million yuan.

edit: So it is 260 million? God they are not shooting him because they need to spend more time debriefing him.

Why would China want any 'Western Weapon' in the first place ---- Arent they supposed to be self sufficient in that ?? :azn:

Does life sentence in china carry the possibility of parole for such cases? Was it 20 years term or till you die.

If you think about it, once a life sentence is handed out, he's gonna be out of public sight for the rest of his life. If they shoot him behind the scene, nobody would know.

For cases with international connections it's best to keep it low profile.

Nah he's probably made enough friends high up to save him from the death penalty (unfortunately), how else are we to explain why someone with a lesser charge has been executed and he allowed to live?

The sentence is definitely too light, esp as I've heard on the Sinica podcast that in China the average jail time served by prisoners who are 'jailed for life' is about 14 years.

But I think Kang was a member of CPC central committee so maybe he has patron among the higher-ups, which could explain the light sentence.

I remember reading that fast breeder research was being done in China. So thanks for this post.

Japan is a baniya , they act like a peaceful nation because they know how much atrocities they commited againt other nations (Korea or China) etc

So out of fear , they have to take American DRUGS .. becuase it gives them a false hope that they are protected but reality is that US is changing its dynamics it has seen that Japan is no longer a great strategic ally

Its more focused on India , and Japan now really has to be like a Baniya and change alliance - cuz if you noticed Americans banned Japanese cars in recent years due to fake recalls to bad mouth and blame their own problems on Japan

Also Japan also tried to change world currency from dollar to Euro not long ago etc so Uncle is tricky character but Japan is juts a baniya

Tags along with ppl with power to preserve its own status in world that is why they send their forces into Afghanistan a symbolic gesture that Japan agrees with US but average Japanese don't really care about US that much
