A prototype of Japan's 5th generation stealth air superiority fighter, the Mitsubishi ATD-X Shinshin, will make its maiden flight in February, Japan's Ministry of Defense Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI) announced.

Prior to its first test-flight, the aircraft will undergo extensive taxiing and ground trials at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries testing center located in Aichi Prefecture on Japan's main island of Honshu. From there, the fighter prototype is expected to fly to Gifu Air Field, an airbase of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, situated in the neighbouring prefecture of Gifu sometime in February.

I must correct this statement; the atd x shinshin is not the actual 'fighter' per se, its merely the training platform from which an eventual product will be strained.

We will , ultimately, aim to design 2 variants of our 5th generation air superiority fighter:
  • F3
  • F3E

The F3, F3A will ultimately replace our Air Fleet of F-15Js.

I have seen a red small sized thingy in your F series aircraft, which itself look like a small aircraft, drone or stand off weapon, anti ship missile, any idea ?

Most likely the X-ASM3 or the upgrade, the X-ASM4 (which is in research production right now). And yes, a hyper-sonic anti ship missile.

 After multiple delays, they finally got this test demonstration to fly. What's so special about it?

Let's give credit to where it is due. It will be quite an impressive feat for Japan to become the 4th country in the world to have a flying prototype! we'll just have to be patient for an actual video footage to materialize.

At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Japan, seeking to replace its aging fleet of fighter aircraft, began making overtures to the United States on the topic of purchasing several Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor fighters for their own forces.[5] However the U.S. Congress had banned the exporting of the aircraft in order to safeguard secrets of the aircraft's technology such as its extensive use of stealth; this rejection necessitated Japan to develop its own modern fighter, to be equipped with stealth features and other advanced systems.

A radio-controlled 1/5 scale model made its first flight in 2006 to gain data on performance at high angles of attack and to test new sensory equipment and self-repairing flight control systems.[6]

Following these preliminary steps, the decision was taken in 2007 to push ahead with the multi billion-yen project. At the time of this decision, production was forecast to start roughly 10 years later, around 2017. In 2007, the ATD-X was expected to conduct its maiden flight in 2014.[7] In 2011, the maiden flight is to take place in 2014 or 2015.[8]

On July 2014, the TRDI (Technical Research & Development Institute ) released the first official photos of the ATD-X prototype, and stated that the aircraft was undergoing tests on the ground. The fighter prototype is expected to be fully developed by 2018.[9]

The ATD-X program will then lead to a F-3 fighter to be produced in 2027.[10]

Of course there will be challenges to any major project such as these. I suppose Japan is inspired by thee successes of our Chinese partners in their own J-20 project, as well as in the successful joint projects between China and the Pakistani air force in producing the J10/J17 variants.

Anyways, best of luck to all.

Yeah, didn't knew its name or operational status.

Its not as exposed as India's impressive Brahmos project , but i suppose functions the same. Tho what I admire about India's Brahmos project is that it collaborates the expertise of both Indian military scientists and Russian peers. Perhaps in the future there would be ample opportunity for Japan , India, Russia and possibly even China to collaborate on such projects.

I will give credit where one deserves. We are talking about a technology demonstrator prototype. NOT A REAL stealth prototype. There is nothing stealth in that aircraft beside it is a plane scale back 1/3 of a real aircraft that can fly. Any country can accomplish that, including the Indian.

Knowing how useless the F2, aka F-16 copy, was. Overprice and lack of capabilities. There is a reason they closed that program and chose to use upgraded US- F-16 and bought F-35. It was a fail program and I don't expect the same result with this tech demonstrator. They need to prove themselves first before we can give them the benefit of doubts.

An informative post! This is first time I ever come across F3, do you have more info? Maybe a sticky thread is good.
