They are known as -- 皇宮警察本部 -- and about 900 men strong. Roughly the size of a regiment. Their sole duty is to provide all around protection for His Imperial Majesty the Emperor, and all members of the Imperial Family. They are under the personal control of the Imperial Household. Their dedication and unswerving loyalty is to the Emperor first, Japan second.

Singapore's Capital was occupied by the Imperial Guards, who then transferred occupation to Gen. Yamashita.
They are a ceremonial unit, but they are proven in battle. And they never surrendered. Not one.
