Japanese Defense Budget Expansion Includes Two 20,000 Ton Cruisers

China should make explicit that China's non first use of nuclear policy will not be applicable specifically to Japan as it intends to develop strategic offensive weapons and pursue preemptive strike policies at potential enemies now.

Yeah good idea.

Japanese Defense Budget Expansion Includes Two 20,000 Ton Cruisers

By LIA WONG in JAPAN, NAVAL, NEWS, SURFACE COMBATANT September 1, 2022

According to Mainchi Shimbun, the Japan Ministry of Defense announced on August 31 that it will commission two Aegis-equipped surface combatants to replace the earlier plan of Aegis Ashore installations, commissioning one by the end of fiscal year 2027, and the other by the end of FY2028 – an ambitious design and construction turn around time. The budget for design and other related expenses are to be submitted in the form of “item requests”, without specific amounts, and is expected to clear legislation by FY2023. Construction is to begin in the following year of FY2024.

The Chinese 11,000 ton Type 055 destroyer is the largest surface combatant in production (JMSDF)

In response to the abandoned project to construct two Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense systems in the Akita and Yamaguchi prefectures of Japan, a new resolution was passed in December of 2020 to construct two ships of similar capability for replacement. Current information describes the vessel with a standard displacement of 20,000 tons, an overall length no greater than 210 metres, and a beam no greater than 40 metres.

The class is thus expected to be the largest class in service of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force, surpassing the two 19,000 ton Izumo class helicopter, and now F-35, carriers. The massive displacement will also make it the largest surface combatant in production in the world, far outweighing the Chinese Type 055 and South Korean Sejong the Great-classes, outweighing the two combined. The massive scale of the vessels will lend it stability under heavy sea states, increasing interception readiness, and increase endurance at sea, similarly increasing combat readiness.

Despite the massive stature, reports suggest a planned crew complement of around 110 sailors and officers, with private cabins for all onboard. In accordance with recent JMSDF designs for high-automation, a response to the shrinking number of personnel in the Force. The ships are to also be equipped to defend against Hypersonic Glide Vehicles, new hypersonic missile designs too evasive for current ballistic missile defense systems to reliably intercept.

The Ministry has also made a record 5,594.7 billion yen (40 Billion USD) budget request for FY2023, including budgets for projects such as the accelerated deployment of long range counter-strike cruise missiles to destroy adversary installations, with the possibility of an even higher bill at the budget recompilation at the end of the year.

HAPPINESS !!!!

That meant Japan preparing for war with China and will war with China.

Thereby allowing China to exert full compensation for Nanjing Massacre and Unit 731

Raze Yasakuni Shrine to the ground and built either memorial to Comfort Women there or a public toilet with Japanese Emperor as the custodian of the toilet.

Free Okinawa and Ryuku Islands and Hokkaido from Japan.

Aw shucks, was hoping to make it in before some of the triggered responses.

This is only our 4th largest shipyard.

It is building five type 055 at the same time. The construction time of each batch type 055 is only two years.

Now we are expanding our navy faster than the entire NATO plus the entire Warsaw Pact during the cold war.

I believe it is the recent photo of the 5 Type 052D/DL building. I still think it could include one more 052D/DL ship being built at the same time, totaling 6 units in just one shipyard.

I don't like that.

A gentleman's favorite warship should have something long and thick.

Don't get me wrong. I'm talking about naval guns.
If you want a “thicker” design, perhaps the Type 076 should be built like the French Charles De Gualle Aircraft Carrier. 2 launching stations, including capable of launching a fixed wing AWACS, and a full flat deck space for traditional landings/recoveries. It could also be Nuclear powered and with the Type 076 at the same expected tonnage as the Charles De Gualle (42,000-45,000 tons) it could be nuclear powered to allow the ship to carry a “Full Complement” of aircraft; 30-40 aircraft; including 30 fixed wing fighter aircraft (in the size of the Rafale), 2 AWACS, and 5-8 helicopters.

A smaller carrier could also be built with the Same Reactor as one planned on the 100,000 ton the Type 004 or one used on the Type 096 SSBN.

It would also mean, China could afford to build enough carriers and keep them on station, especially for protecting their SLOCs. Two light carriers could be home ported in Djibouti and two light carriers could be based in Cambodia.

055A is probably still in the PPT stage. Because the electromagnetic gun is not mature yet.
Looks like the Railgun is a significant capability desired. This video says 128 VLS, but in another thread you said 160 VLS if I’m not mistaken. Any update on the planned VLS count?

My previous news was that PLAN will build 16 Type 055Bs at 160VLS each.

Now the news is 36 Type 055Bs at 128VLS each.

Railgun has had a breakthrough, and it's likely to come.

In what time frame?

It's too expensive to build 36 type 055B that many numbers, so it's not too likely.

A military expert with a naval background has already mentioned the key words "36 ships", "rail guns" and "laser weapons" on the television programme. The news of 36 055Bs is now all over the Chinese military network.

To be honest, I also doubt that the Navy has enough naval officers to use that many warships.

Japanese aren't the best strategists in the world. They can only plan a few moves ahead while Han Chinese got a strategic mindset for at least 100 moves ahead. Whatever the Japanese can muster up, I'm pretty sure China already put the best minds at work developing strategies or assets to neutralize that threat.

It's a gift from God actually, he never made the Japanese able to outsmart nor outengineer the Hans.

When I read Japan might preemptively launch 500 missiles at Chinese targets I'm rolling my eyes. I'd be hard-pressed if any missile actually made it to their target without being shot down or jammed even when launched preemptively. Toyota just makes you think of reliability but the average Japanese product actually works like crap. Japan only has the best engineers and make top products in the world in anime not in real life war scenarios...

JAP cannot and will not make war with china , they cant sustain it and if they join the US led war their economy will be dead and they are facing North Korea in addition to china.
