Japanese chief of Army staff in Kolkata

KOLKATA: On Tuesday, when the Japanese chief of Army staff Gen Eiji Kimizuka and his wife Junko Kimizuka passed through Red Road on their way to Victoria Memorial from Fort William, they would not have known how important a role the city of Kolkata played in stemming the progress of the Imperial Japanese Army from the North East, nearly 70 years ago. In fact, the Allied forces had even used the Red Road as an emergency runway for aircraft that took part in the 'Over the Hump' Operation. Kimizuka and his wife may probably have known that in 1943 - exactly 70 years ago - Japanese aircraft had bombed Kolkata (then Calcutta) on several occasions, resulting in major panic and some damage.

"Many parts of the operation against the Japanese, right up to Indo-China, were planned in Kolkata. Fort William played an important role in all this. There also used to be an oil pipeline right from Budge Budge to China. This was built by US military engineers. It was the longest pipeline in the world at that time. This is a part of history that people don't normally discuss during such visits. However, had there been some kind of memorial about the happenings of 1942-43, visitors - even from Japan - could have visited it. There is a museum near Kohima on the epic battle between the Japanese and Allies that was fought there. The museum pays homage to both the Allied and Japanese soldiers and there are no hard feelings. Unfortunately, there is no such place in Kolkata," an official said.

Kimizuka and his wife are on a four-day official trip to India. On Tuesday, the Japanese general met Lt Gen Dalbir Singh, general officer commanding-in-chief, Eastern Command, and discussed issues concerning security, enhanced military ties between the two Armies and other issues of mutual interest. In the recent past, Japan and India have participated in joint military exercises. There are several issues of mutual concern such as terrorism that need to be discussed from time to time, an official said. The general and his wife were taken around some historical parts of Fort William. Officials believe that the trip will go a long way in cementing ties between the two countries.
