Japan to construct 8 Aegis destroyer system from 2015

How much is tonnage of Izumo class & why aren't you building more bigger carriers,i assume it is a political constraint not a technical one Right?

More infos about 2 brand new Atago class Aegis destroyers :

These brand new ships will replace the old Tachikaze class destroyers. Japan has spent about ¥ 150 billion for each Atago class destroyers in the past, though due to inflation the expense for 2 more Atago class destroyers are expected to be around ¥ 200 billion or more. The Aegis weapon system of existing Atago class destroyer were baseline 7.0, which the new Atago class destroyers are expected to be adopted with baseline 9.0 or above. Also the new Atago class destroyers will be able to load 1 ASW helicopter like as before, though usually other Aegis destroyers like Ahrleigh-Burke class destroyers and Sejong the Great class destroyers were able to load two. Maybe this is the composure of JMSDF who has more platforms for ASW helicopters and ASW mission than enough.

Well said, I'm actually impressed with the Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs for taking the initiative to replace the old / retired Tachikaze Class. These ships had been retired from the active fleet since 2007.What I'm impressed with is that they did replace these ships with the introduction of the Hatakaze Class , i guess adding the 2 new Atago Class of ships is to augment the Surface Fleet's capabilities.

Let me share a picture of these retired ships:

@Red Mahura ,

Did you hear the news reports of retrofitting the retired Tachikaze ships into JCG sips? that would be an interesting "transformation" lol.

Hmmmm...... I've never heard of that but what is the reason for retrofitting such an ald type of ship for JMSDF? (due to lack of my english abilities, I don't understand the wird 'JCG sip'. Would you tell me what is the meanibg of this word?) If thats the case of ROK navy, I would simply understand it as they lack enough money, though I can't find any reason for Japan to do so. Is it just a financial problem or sth more than that?

JCG is Japan Coast Guard. I know that due to the burden of maintaining maritime interdiction duties, the JCG had been in need of new vessels for quite some time. I did remember reading before that the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force was planning to retire the Hatsuyuki Class escort destroyers , and then retrofitting them for JCG duties. There are 6 ships of this class (Hatsuyuki) so their retrofitting would be an added resource for the JCG.

In regards to the ROK Coast Guard, i remember reading that it was phased out completely. Do you happen to know the reason for this? And now that it is phased out, who is responsible for maritime interdiction duties in the South Korean Maritime Domain?

Korean CG has taken the responsibility of insufficient, reaction towards the sink of Sewol Ferry, which President Park Geun Hye has disbanded the organization. Current plan is that criminal investigation will be integrated to land police and new coast guard will be installed as affiliated organization of National Security Services(can't find exact translation for this, it is 국가안전처 in Korean and 国家安全処 in Japanese.) This NSS will have the Fire Defense Headquarters, Maritime Safety Department and Special Disaster Preparedness Headquarters as affiliated organization and will also have special rescue team. The aim is to integrate the disaster management which the duties are currently distributed in several different departments.

p.s : The Korean word you've wrote, "thanks to you friend" is translated as "고마워 친구" ^^

Hi @Red Mahura ,

I am so very sorry about what had happened to the ferry accident, I had been observing the situation back when it happened. Please accept my sincere condolences for the young Korean children that had died, my prayers for them and their bereaved families. It was playing in Japan news and please know that the national mood was absolute sympathy.
It had hurt many of us, because it reminded us of the 2011 -- 東北地方太平洋沖地震-- where over 17,000 people were lost. Many of whom were children and elderly.

I think that it was a good decision by President Park Geun Hye to disband the organization and to have its responsibilities divided into proper departments where they may react and respond properly. Knowing the professionalism of Korean soldiers, and Korean sailors, I am confident that everything will go smooth.

Thank you my tomodachi ! ^^

Sincerely I remain,
@Nihonjin1051

As far as I remember, my parents also sent some relief aid to japan in 2011. It was a big disaster and I am sorry about that many people felt the agony. Though I am glad to see that the radiation didn't spread out so far, until important cities like Tokyo or Kyoto ; I've heard that radioactive level of Tokyo is lower than in Seoul. You know, concrete also emits radiation...) I wish a good luck who are now currently working on Fukushima.

福島が早く回復することを願っています。 長寿命、日本!

These two new AEGIS will be a much needed addition to the surface fleet. Remember that we are quite committed to the development of our Carrier Force. A CBG is imperative now. JMSDF is to induct our 2nd Izumo-Class Light Carrier by 2017 as well. As for radar systems, we are satisfied (for the time being) with AN/SPY-1D.

Japan and Australia have entered into a naval R&D partnership, so we are possibly to explore a joint-designed radar system as well-- we shall see. Remember that we just signed the partnership this month. Everything is unfolding so fast as we speak.

;)

What about japanese land based SAM systems and shore based Anti ship systems? These would be crucial in a sudden conflagaration over the disputed islands.

Hi

Aren't japan plan to field aegis ashore too?

.
seems like a moot point for me.
for every Aegis Japan builds China can/is building 4 of it's very own
but gotta work with what you got.

How many destroyers does China have?

.
Right now JMSDF (Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force) owns 6 Aegis destroyers which are 4 Kongo class and 2 Atago class. Looking at how they are adopting BMD baseline 5.0 and ACB12 ( criteria of 2012) for their Atago Class, we can see JMSDF is giving an effort constructing their AEGIS BMD system. According to Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan is now planning to build 2 more Aegis destroyers ( guess it is something near to Atago flight 2 ) and will construct 8 Aegis destroyer system, 2 vessels each for 4 escort flotilla (Yokosuka, Sasebo, Maizuru and Kure). As what Yomiuri says, they're public-known reason for making 2 more vessels is N.Korea, though as many of you guys can easily know, their actual reason seems to be (of course) China.

The Yomiuri Shimbun -

The government will start building two Aegis-equipped destroyers with the latest missile defense systems starting next fiscal year, in light of the progress seen in missile development by North Korea, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The Defense Ministry will include related expenses in its budgetary requests, informed sources said. The government will start building one destroyer in the next fiscal year and the other in fiscal 2016, aiming at reinforcing the defense system by increasing Aegis-equipped vessels from the current six to eight in fiscal 2020, sources said.

The government had unveiled its policy of introducing two more Aegis-equipped destroyers within 10 years in the National Defense Program Guidelines, adopted by the Cabinet late last year.

Earlier this year, North Korea continually test-fired what were believed to be short- and mid-range missiles.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera recently said, “While the deployment of missiles in readiness for battle proceeds (in North Korea), the country is carrying out exercises to further improve the capability (of its missile system),” leading the government to conclude that the number of Aegis-equipped destroyers should be increased as soon as possible.

It will cost about ¥150 billion and take five years to build one Aegis-equipped destroyer.

Four of the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s six Aegis-equipped destroyers are Kongo-type destroyers equipped with the missile defense system.

An Aegis-equipped destroyer carries an advanced detection and information processing system capable of striking multiple targets such as aircraft, missiles, destroyers and submarines. The government is also bringing forward reinforcement of the defense system because China has been strengthening its development and deployment of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles capable of attacking vessels.

The SPY-1D Radar's production ends in 2017, which Japan seems to be able to take it's last bus to make their Aegis destroyer with SPY-1D. Or else, it will be much expensive AMDR for them to choose, which the expense will be highly increased for the 2 more Aegis destroyer.

However, this isn't such a delightful choice for JMSDF. Right now under rule of Shinjo Abe, JMSDF is trying to grow bigger with more ships. As we know, Japan has enough money to take this action but they are lacking people and that is why those new ships built for JMSDF highly takes care of automation and crew member decrease. In there view point, these 2 new Aegis destroyers are not effective in contrast to it's cost that with this amount of money to build and amount of people to operate these 2 vessels, they can make and operate about 4 ships which can overtake any kind of Chinese navy warship. (eg : Akizuki and Takanami class)

Excuse me if I haven't understood this correctly, but I think your "headline" in the thread is wrong. It seems like Japan is going to build another 8 AEGIS destroyers, when the plan is to increase from current 6 to 8 in 2020 or 2025 ? Article says in the next "ten years".

The headline makes me think 6 + 8 = 14 AEGIS in 2020, which I think is not correct. Your article also says from 6 to 8, but the headline is wrong, I think. South Korea would definitely NOT like seing Japan build another 8 by 2020. Fortunately it's not possible, so no worries there:)

seems like a moot point for me.
for every Aegis Japan builds China can/is building 4 of it's very own
but gotta work with what you got.

Of course will PLAN build a lot more. There is nothing better than having aggressive Japan with a crazy "prime minister". He's best source for increased military budget for PLA/PLAAF/PLAN/Missile Forces :D

So "let him" be crazy and we'll see how far that'll get him by 2020 and beyond. Who's gonna build more destroyers. Will be fun to see :)
