Japan used to be known as a futuristic country.

Decades ago, many people said Japan is a robotic country, or a country that will lead the world in robotic.

Autonomous driving car supposed to be invented and being popularized by Japan.

Food delivery robot is supposed to be a very Japanese thing, and should be a very common sight on the street of Tokyo.

Not just that, a robot to clean the street, park, building, house, etc.

Even Japan has a robot army.

To have all of that, Japan should be very strong in semiconductor and AI.

Their process technology might be weak but their semicon equipment is world class.

I have a Fujitsu laptop made in Japan that I bought in 2012. I consider it world class. The BIOS is very thorough and detailed. If you plug in a second HDD via the DVD bay caddy, you can enable/disable each HDD in the BIOS (to prevent a virus or malware spreading from one HDD to another). No other machine of this class has this ability. Even my Huawei Matebook circa 2021, the BIOS is simplistic with few options (it looked like it was designed by some highschooler). Unfortuntately, Fujitsu hard coded the PWM frequency of the LCD screen to a very low 200Hz in the system. You cannot change it even if you swap the LCD screen with another brand. Meanwhile my Dad's and Mom's similar class laptops from Acer and Asus both operate in the killohertz PWM frequencies. As result the Fujitsu laptop hurts my eyes to use and it's been sitting mostly in my closet ever since I bought it. Japanese equipment may be world class, but to me they're more like world class junk! You mean I spent up close to $1000 for a closet queen?!?! It's like why bother meticulously design every part of the laptop to the utmost world class status but neglect the usability of the most important part of the laptop, which is the LCD screen?

One time I read a blog/rant of some Chinese guy living in Japan. He claimed Japanese products he bought there had the consistency of dog poo. At first I didn't believe nor understood what he meant. Now after my Fujitsu-Made-in-Japan experience, I know exactly what he meant!

Nice but NEC was also a top chipmaker in Japan in 1987. Hitachi, Mitsubishi, and Fujitsu too.

Plus this was in the '80s. Toshiba went on to dominate the laptop business probably from 1993 up until 2006 when the MacBook came out.

The problem with the Japanese is they are managed by dinosaurs, thinking this era is still like the 80s walkman era. Their products are not consumee friendly. But they do sit on some very powerful legacy technologies.

Korean has even worse managers and engineers, so is India -- the most horrible in the world.

Japan managers consider relatively benevolent.

I guess one strong reason of Japan demise is US mandated Japan not to progress in semi conductor -- just like what US did to China,

They are not known for their software. Name some business software that is used worldwide and was made by a Japanese company. Not going to be a long list.

The rise of Korean and Taiwanese semi con is due to US support against Japan.

US always pretend there is free market and no government intervention.
