Japan Offers To Sell India 2 Shinmaywa US-2 Amphibians

one important thing we are missing is japans constitution doesnt allow it to export weapons and millitary equipment . This sale ( even without the friend and foe avionics, rendering it useless for milltary purposes) signifies that japan is more than willing to export to india not only weapons but high level millitary technology once it remilitarizes ( earliest estimates are july this year) .

We are not a rich country but we have a dam big land and sea area to cover. And not to forget to hostile borders. And our domestic industry is way behind others.

Yu got better option for that ??? I would loved to know if I missed something here

Buy only what is really required.

I believe we can survive without buying amphibious aircraft at 100 M USD per piece.

Well I really don't know why IAF want it. May be @sancho or @Abingdonboy can tell.
But IN definitely need such platform.

Although if its just for civilian use only then I agree with you. This platform is more useful for special forces ops in IOR

IAF joint after ICG and IN issued such a requirement, but I share the view that it's not really needed. Some reports said, they want to add some EW / intel sensors, to have such surveillance capabilities in the area too, but neither is that a useful platform, nor would it be a civillian use again. Even for IN I would question the need, since SAR operations should be done by ICG, while transport duties are normally IAFs prerogative, so everything is pretty confusing in this deals.
I also find the pricetag a bit high, but then agin it's similar to the C130J, which it shares avionics and engines too.

For the ICG, the ShinMaya is overkill. Also, defined operational area for This craft makes sense only in two conditions:

Indian Navy
Surveillance and ASW. With the range this craft has we should be able to make good use of this. This can nicely complement the fleet of Poseidon's being introduced. And with the ability to land on water, it can remain on station in relatively calm waters by simply landing.

Search and Rescue - Makes sense, but choppers seem to be more tuned for this, unless we start saying we are going to provide SAR for everybody in the Arabian Sea area and IOR.

Insertion of special troops - This can be used for speedier insertions into hostile terrain.

Indian Air Force
Surveillance - Flying over the Arabian Sea, this opens up more opportunities for harassing hostile shipping and providing a smaller AWACS cover for aggressive action over areas till now off limits through the Arabian Sea area.
Insertion - Similar to IN

But then again why not look at at Be-200 / A-40. Also it will come with no strings on usage.

Which is why IN buys P8Is and MRMR aircrafts, not amphibious once "with any arms" or the needed sensor capability.

No, helicopters have way too less range and endurance for this and would require much higher numbers to cover the same area. If India takes it seriously to provide safty and security for the sea lanes around India, SAR operations will be crucial and therefor you need a CG that can not only send patrol aircrafts, but that is able to land at the sea and recover people.

Insertion of special troops - This can be used for speedier insertions into hostile terrain.

Which is not needed in the maritme area, since there are no possible enemy countries with islands to land on and that's what we have the C130Js for.

See above and the fact that IAF will cover this already with the maritime patrol missions of MKIs or Jags.

The US-2 seems to have more operational advantages than the Be 200, at least going by the specs and obviously latest avionics, which the Russians often don't have.

. . . .
I am really pissed of with so many foreign acquisitions that we are indulging in.

At the end of the day, we are not a rich country.

Agreed. But we need to acknowledge the treat perception from our rogue neighbors !

Finances will fall in place if we have a able leadership in Delhi and tight the screws of tax defaulters from real estate and business.

. .
LOL

Is India going to fight a war ???

How do you fight a war with an unarmed aircraft and how do you cover a coastline of several thousands of Km + several islands with just 2 aircrafts?

. .

+ I've heard for sure that the IN are interested in 10+ airframes- I don't know where Shiv has got this (wrong) figure of 2 from. Common sense would tell you 2 is not enough for the Navy- no where near enough!

japan should shift production of this aircraft to India, almost 100 million $ for an amphibious aircraft is a bit much. it would be cheaper to manufacture in India.

And pray tell me where do we manufacture them? Whom do you expect to manufacture it? HAL? huhahahaha!

Ek Tejas ko banane mein to unki jaan nikal gai. Abhi 6 aur projects hain.. Agar ye bhi daal diya list mein to to samjho mil chuka hamari Navy ko US-2.

It will take 2 decades just to get the first model out knowing sarkari bureaucracy in manufacturing

Let them be manufactured in Japan for now. We can later negotiate for a spare parts production facility in India to ensure 100% availability of parts at all the times.
