Japan may help SL buy P-3C maritime surveillance aircraft (Also invited to Malabar Naval Exercise)

.
Of course. But when your frontline naval vessels are 2nd hand OPVs,buying costly MSAs make little sense. What I think is Japan is offering its used P-3Cs to Sri Lanka.Force multipliers nonetheless, but somewhat unnecessary due to the lack of proper navy.

What are the capabilities of the Orions? When we were hunting the LTTE floating armories back in the Eelam war 4 we faced some difficult challenges while searching for those ships in the deep ocean. I think if we had a aircraft like the Orion we could have detected them much earlier and quickly. In fact given that Sri Lanka's vast expanses of ocean area that we own, I think it is necessary for Sri Lanka to have a long range patrol ship like the Orion. @Tshering22

I believe that Sri Lanka should upgrade the navy in order to protect her oceanic holding while providing a deterrent against threats such as pirates. In the same time Sri Lanka should introduce a proper naval air arm also.

Ya Chinese debt is just small part of your total debts...So what Chinese are charging 6+% interest on those debt as compare to .25% to 3% by World bank and ADB....

That's a big lie. Chinese has not charged 6+ interest rate.

To be frank in present world countries in south East Asia and South Asia will have to take sides either US , Japan, India, Even Australia Or China...You just need to decide what will be the best for your Nation....

Sri Lanka don't need to take the side of any country. We are independent and non aligned country. As for now, China is our trading partner and we regarded her as our friend because of the support she rendered to us in the time of need.

That capability you can get even if you've good coastal radars or capable Frigates/Destroyers.P-3C is an overkill for such surface target because that kind of role even Dornier type aircraft can perform.P-3C is notable for its ASW capabilities. Its not like SL doesn't need this capability(which they lack now),but A proper naval vessels should be cornerstone of a Navy before they go for Naval Air Arm.P-3C is a wonderful weapon, only when you've a proper Navy and facing some form of threats to enemy submarines.SL lacks a Navy,so countering subsurface threats should come as secondary concern IMO.Even a second hand P-3C will cost way above $15 mil, which can be spent on some OPVs/Corvettes.

Of course a big trading partner. You guys docked a Chinese submarine in your port. Chinese agreed to make air craft identification zone in Sri lankan port operated by China. Essentially making it a Chinese land.

Such a neutral party is Sri Lanka. Harboring once adversaries was great thing.

Funny... this coming from a country that armed, funded and trained a terrorist organisation that ended up blowing one of its ex prime ministers to smithereens and making 1200 Indian soldiers into fertiliser for Sri Lankan soil.

As if nobody in your army became fertizers for land against a small gang called LTTE:lol:.

Forget the Sri Lankan army. What happend to the world's 4th largest army in Sri Lanka? They couldn't even defeat a small bunch of rag tag terrorists. How the hell then they would defeat someone more powerful?:lol:

SLAF currently use beechcraft king air for maritime patrol but a one with longe range and higher loiter time is needed.
A few OPVs will be delivered soon and frigates are being negotiated, until then a Naval air arm is highly unlikely

As @GR!FF!N said Sri Lanka would not have a immediate requirement for a aircraft like P-3 Orion. We could use the Dorniers as the Indian navy and cost guard, which are cheap and reliable. As for Sri Lanka, naval air arm is a must IMHO.

You talking about which small rag tag terrorists ?

The one gave your army a bloody nose.

I agree that SL needs to boost their navy more than their air force.

But patrols and search and kill roles can be done by UAVs and UCAVs which are cheaper to operate than attack helicopters. This will save SLN a lot of money and also get rid of pirates and other sea-based dangers.

.
I wonder how much a DHC-8 MPA-D8 ,ATR 72MP or EMB-145 MP cost compared to a second hand Orion. They lack the ASW abilities which SL won't need in the near future and unnecesary electronics can be removed to cut costs

The issue with the UAVs are their range. We need a stable platform that has enough range. Possible something like Donier 227.
