The earth is covered 70% with water, and I don't know any underwater city beside Rapture. Looking for a specific sub is like finding needle in a haystack, it could work but doesn't worth it. The land, on the other hand, is flooded with human and is under constant watchful eyes from the sky full of drones, spy planes and satallites. Hiding a walking nuclear base in the middle of the forest is not plausible at all. If you need a moving nuclear silo, I suggest using what the Soviet already made, their nuclear trains.

Unless there are certain advantages for humanoid robot, they will just turn this mecha into a moving gun platform. There goes my mecha dream. :undecided:

Actually, most mecha are like that - a moving gun platform, similar to modern tanks, which are simply large guns on an armored tractor

I think one weapon mecha can have but a tank can't: a melee weapon. With a blast shield and a slegdhammer, I think a mecha can easily crush light armored vehicles, or disable tanks by destroying the tank's sensors and weapons. Of course it only happens if the mecha can get close, but hey, aren't mecha invented to do urban warfare?

Not exactly - you have to consider the size of the mecha, the armor it has which could vary depending on how powerful the engine the mecha has and the enemy themselves. If you have a large (Gundam-size) mecha, the sledgehammer would have been redundant and you would rather use the feet, but its size makes it a magnet for every heavy weapons.

Also I wouldn't suggest using melee weapons in modern warfare, and would rather have guns on them like these ones.

Just put in sufficient armor to withstand bullets up to 20mm caliber and a camera, and you have at least a good mech. Remember, in terms of military weapons, size doesn't always matter.

Our current technology focus too heavily on offensive weapons. Unless mech is developed for more defensive aproach (i.e increase the survivability of soldier inside and outside the mech), I think it will be easily outdone by existing weapon platforms like tanks or light armored vehicles, which are cheaper, better armored, easier to produce and maintain (comparing to bipedal or any walking mech of course). Also if it becomes a bullets trading fest, I will stick with the old realiable tank, rather than a 3m tall walking target.

Well, 3 to 4-meter tall mecha won't replace tanks, rather the vehicle this would likely replace are internal security vehicles such as the M1117 ASV, VAB,ERC 90 Sagaie, FV101 Scorpion and other similar vehicles.

.
Mechas would be perfect for 'anti crowd control' strategy. :)

Remember, we could say that tanks came from cars, bombers came from fighters. If mecha becomes popular, I see nothing will stop people from developing a more robust, more heavily armed mecha.

True, the image of a steel giant is certainly for frightening than an iron box. It might have something to do with human psychology, I think.

A great way to crush militant protests, imho. Sans human rights....lol.

Not literally "crushing" them :D. Imagine a 3 meter tall steel giant blasting huge noise while walking toward a crowd. With each step the ground shakes and soon the panic spreads among the crowd. I bet few would dare to continue their "little" protest.

Ha ha ha, you're the merciful one, @xesy --- i would be "less" merciful to these protesters. I would blast them all with electric shurikens....

Btw, these would be perfect as "shock" troops if ever invading an enemy stronghold....if ever....like you know...retaking islands. :)

You watch Pacific Rim right? You know how mecha look pretty clumsy around water. For the island we have these bad boys

I bet Japan have the same force too?

Well, the most likely starting point of mecha are either humanoid robots such as PETMAN and Atlas robots or other robots such as BigDog or powered exoskeletons, both of which are still in development, though the Kurata already jump-started , most likely for recreational and disaster response.

Aside from those, an American company did made a walking tractor

From the looks of it, mechas like from Star Wars has a higher probability of being made in real-life.

This spider-like tractor have a long way to go. As for what is like to be applied IRL, I think power armor and exoskeleton have the higher chance than mecha. Maybe a mecha-power armor hybrid is the answer.
