Japan Diet Approves Bill to Allow Japanese Troops to Fight Abroad

I don't think it would be very hard for them. The hardest part would be how to test it. Some deep hole in some far off island. Or maybe they will make a deal with the U.S. to explode one for them in exchange for a base.
US will not allow them.

It is, since finally voted, but in all honesty, it was known to be on its way already, alaung…
I mentioned it on my blog over a year ago. [ Here : jump to last subject for links to news. ]

The vote you report is the confirmation which Abe's majority made quite certain was coming.

You are right it is major news and it may be the single worst flaw in China's aggressive policy
that it brought this almost unimaginable change in Japan to pass in reaction.
Mind you, there are also changes in their constitution regarding society that are essential too
that came along with it, just not directly military matters but important and not only to locals.

Have a good day, Tay.

Hitler revived the defeated Germany and drag the world into chaos. It's obvious that Japan is following Nazi German footsteps. Japan does this by its own nature and it has nothing to do with China, stupid French!

Brilliant answer my dear fellow, a subtle mix of hyper-nationalism and racism with affixed insult!
Why deal with reality when such stellar reasoning can be had, heh? Obvious indeed!

Being stupid however, I must stay on the safe ground of truth, not being bright enough to handle fantasy!
I'm soooooooooo sorry!

… tssssk, good luck grappling with facts, Tay.

The military buildup has been a rising trend since the Koizumi administration. However, going as far as acquiring nuclear weapons is very unlikely. A nuclear option will not only meet stiff resistance in the Japanese Diet, but also under the general populace.

I did a paper not a long time ago on the subject of the international anti-nuclear movement. Japan was and still is, without a doubt, the most anti-nuclear country in the world. The memories of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still fresh and this is an event that both the politicians in the Diet and the ordinary Japanese will never forget, EVER. It has come to the point where even civilian nuclear technology has become such a controversial topic in Japan, that you won't be able to even get to the possibility of acquiring military nuclear technology, even if Shinzo Abe wanted to.

For those who are interested, you should read A history of the World Nuclear Disarmament Movement series by the historian Lawrence S. Wittner. He has done an excellent job in researching this subject, with the anti-nuclear movement in Japan through the 1950s-2000s included.

So yes, the Japanese are certaintly pushing for a conventional military buildup with maybe even some ABM capabilities, but nuclear weapons? In the foreseeable future? No.

Tell me, @Nihonjin1051, what's the opinion of the average Japanese regarding CIVILIAN nuclear technology?

Japan is no. 3 economy in the world. Japan really has to take more responsibility in world affairs. ISIS cut off two Japanese guys, but Japan has no rights of delivering troops to punish IS. It's not fair for Japanese.

Deplyong troops is a very bold move but they could have participated in the coalition's Bombing campaign

Well this seals the whole 'defensive' role of the Imperial Navy as a farce to any person with a brain.

They are allied with the most aggressive and brute acting nation in the world with a long history of irresponsiblities. Now they can partake in 90% of all aggresive wars while whitewashing it a selfdefense whenever the victim defends them self against their allies aggressions counting that as 'agressions' against their ally.

Everyone knows it's been coming since Koizumi's days but this is sort of a crossing the Rubicon moment. I always thought those 'helicopter carriers' they built, that suspiciously look like they could easily be converted to carry VSTOL aircraft, were a pretty bold move.

Anyway, in this increasingly polarised world it would be interesting to see the resurgence of Japanese nationalism and more interesting to see how the rest of Asia reacts.

Japan is a technological powerhouse a Japanese ICBM,Air craft carrier g other such stuff is only a screw driver away

We won't see Japanese nukes for atleast a generation. A generation after WW2 fades from living memory.

It is a much needed policy change , Japan is gradually rising from the shackles of post-war articulations.

Japan , by her very nature , is not a whimsical State, but a Nation that is built for war, built to stand up against hegemony, our 3000 year history bears witness to the Japanese Spirit --- and the Nation's capability to rise up to any challenge of any age.

Spot on! Japan is now all set to project its power starting with the South China Sea. It wants to be a major player on the world stage. For far too long have they tied their hands behind their backs after the end of WWII. They have finally realised that this policy was doing them more harm than good.

Very well said, @OrionHunter

Very well said and I think its important to stress to our friends here that although Japan is a signatory of the NPT and by principle had agreed to its articulations , there is a special clause wherein the Japanese Government had included that Japan has the right to sustain tactical nuclear weapons and if push comes to shove any tension in geopolitical realities may necessitate the Japanese Government vis a vis the Japanese Military to proceed with the military processing of the over 9 tonnes in military grade plutonium, not to mention the 35 tonnes of military grade plutonium stored in Europe. I think that as we proceed towards greater foreign policy initiatives spurred by our Government's recent proposition to follow through with the Mandate of "Proactive Contribution to Peace and Stability" as per Prime Minister Abe Shinzo -- then it may necessitate Japan's nuclearization for defensive purposes.

Tho I should say that tho, any and all political and diplomatic grievances should be addressed rigorously first before we step into the realm of tactical assertion. But that is just my humble personal opinion, in the end the decision lays in the Japanese Government , especially the Ministry of Defense.

Nothing is impossible. When there is need, they will make it.

To be honest, Japan has over 9,000 tonnes of military grade plutonium on reserve. That is enough for Japan to produce over 1,000 nuclear warheads. If Japan so wishes.

As for transport, Japan vis a vis JAXA has the platform to deliver any warhead on global basis and can reach practically every inch , nook and cranny in this world.

Japan has the capability to mass produce (come on we're talking about Japan here, a master of robotic mass production lines) nuclear warheads that can eradicate nations --- if we so wish it. Its not a basis of 'if' we can, its a base of 'when' we want to. That's just the honest to god darn truth.

If the environment becomes hostile, then you will see that Japan will go nuclear. Just as how Japan has now adopted a more active military policy.

Japan is no Switzerland. Japan was a military power in the past, and she will maintain that character for the indefinite future , She will act accordingly given the threat perception in the region. It all depends on relevant partners from controlling the level of environmental political toxicity --- else --- Japan WILL go nuclear.

Yes, of course, tomodachi. The Emperor is such a potent source of national political power.

All he has to do is whisper to the ears of Abe and say, "Let us proceed with nuclear power", and The Diet would follow.

The Emperor , tho He is but a National Symbol of the State, has practical and potent political clout.
