Japan, China in spat over nuclear arsenal

Seoul: Japan has urged China to cut its nuclear arsenal or at least to stop stockpiling more atomic weapons, prompting a strong reaction from Beijing at their foreign ministers' talks, officials said Sunday.

The rare demand came when Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada met his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi at regional talks in South Korea Saturday, said Kazuo Kodama, the press secretary of Japan's foreign ministry.

The Japanese minister said China was the only one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- which also includes the United States, Britain, France and Russia -- that was still accumulating nuclear weapons.

"Amongst the P5, it is only China which is increasing its nuclear arsenal," Okada told Yang during the talks on Saturday, according to Kodama.

"Therefore I would like to request the Chinese government either to reduce the number of nuclear arsenals or at least commit ourselves not to increase its nuclear arsenals from the current level," he quoted Okada as saying.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a statement on Sunday Yang had repudiated Okada's remarks and defended Beijing's nuclear policy.

"Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi refuted the irresponsible remarks by Japan on the spot," Ma said in the statement.

"He pointed out that China's nuclear strategy and nuclear policy is transparent. China's nuclear disarmament proposals and efforts are obvious. China's position is legitimate, transparent, and above reproach."

Yang emphasised China always advocates that nuclear weapons should be completely forbidden and destroyed completely, and it also firmly pursues a nuclear strategy of self-defence, Ma said.

China was the only nuclear-armed country that adhered to the no-first-use policy and promised unconditionally not to use or threaten to use such weapons against nuclear-free states or nuclear-free regions, Ma citedYang as saying.

Yang stressed China never took part in any nuclear arms race and never deployed any nuclear weapons in other countries, while maintaining its nuclear power at the lowest level needed for its security, according to Ma.

Yang had also said he hoped Okada would put first their two countries' bilateral ties and the fundamental interests of their peoples, Ma added.

Seoul's Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed diplomatic source, said Chinese officials felt "uncomfortable" with Okada's demand and even considered boycotting part of the programme at the talks in the southern city of Gyeongju.

Okada and Yang arrived in Gyeongju on Saturday to attend the two-day foreign ministerial meeting with South Korean host Yu Myung-Hwan.

The three foreign ministers discussed issues including the growing tension over the sinking of a South Korean warship near the border with North Korea on March 26, which has led to suspicion falling on the communist North.

China's nuclear arsenal protects Japan from making any strategic mistakes. Japan should strongly urge China to increase spending on nuclear weapons. There is no downside for Japan.

I like Japan, but it's short-sighted stupidity like this from high-command Japanese that proves unproductive.

If Japan does not adhere to Asian Spirit of Family & Cooperation, they will soon be further isolated (see the Toyota treatment by hands of Americans). Japan right now is a large Asian economic & technological power, but it's relative share is QUICKLY DECLINING. In 10 years China will become the most advance nation on the planet, surpassing both USA & Japan. In 20 years, China will eclipse all other nations. In 30 years the difference will be significant. Not only that but regional players such as ASEAN (lead by Vietnam & Indonesia) will far surpass Japan. The reasonable thing is to recognize its natural position in Asia. This is no longer the 1940s -- Japan needs to wake up from its Imperialistic desires. Japan was, is, and will only be one of many descendant nations of China. :smitten:

.
china has no first use and no use against non-nuclear countries, china's arsenal is reported to be one of the smallest of the P5 japan can still their concern up their *****

.
China should not increase it's nuclear bombs #. Also why mess with the japs??

I know china is stronger than before, but that does not mean they should damage their relations with other espically neighbors!

It is time to re-define the Asian identity.

Except india, a western country, all other South Asian nations are Asians. No doubt about that.

india is western because indians hate Asians and in one Japanese forum I saw some photos where indians were seen slaughtering Asian women. I can post those photos to prove my point, but very graphic.

Central Asian nations are Asians. No doubt about that.

South East Asian nations are Asians. Its beyond doubt.

China is Asian, everyone knows that. No need to discuss on it.

Japan should be given the choice whether they want to belong to the Asian entity or not.

Asian identity should not be only geographic, rather Asian identity should be cultural, ethnic and political identity.

Young generation Chinese should take the lead.

read the article it was the japs who questioned china, not that china cares about japans approval.

And mess more things for China by outcasting India and Japan. The only 2 stable nations with some economy. You are urging the young Chinese to go and piggy back whole of Asia for no returns. In any point of adversary if China has look upon other nations then whom will they look upon........ Maoists from Nepal

.
^^ dont talk bad bout Nepal...its a good country....

^^^^ Gpit buddy, it's like the fall of leaves during Autumn: Once the leaves fall to the ground, people forget about it. It happens year and year.

Likewise once China regains its natural place, just like nature things will fall it place, so Japan too will fall into place. :)

China is definitely the next asian leader, but the question is will it use its growing power to work for the interests of all asian countries or intimdate them.Like usa which is nominally leader of nato but works with others as equals more or less. Also china has territorial issues with india, vietnam, russia, taiwan. If this issues are resolved militarily it will not send a right message to the world. It would only isolate china and play into us hands, even if china should win.China would get sarrounded by india and japan ,two nuclear powers on both sides with us and nato backing.
And there are comments like japan will be eclipsed by vietnam are retarded, japanese are a proud, advanced and hardworking people ..While japanese comments on another soveriegn country's arsenal was unacceptable,it does show japan's anxiety with the growth of military power in its neighbourhood. Now japan has the ability to make thousands of nukes if it wanted and i don't think a nuclear japan at china's doorstep is in its interests.
I think china can be the asian leader if its prepared to act as the first among equals amongst asian countries, and not big brother. Then it can bring india and japan into its influence.
I think india and japan are key to chinese future as asian leader because-
I know many people will say india is a ****** country of beggars and so on,caste and poverty and u ovestimate india and...so on.But
firstly, whether u like it or not india is the second fastest growing economic power.
secondly its population is nearly equal to china.thirdly its a nuclear power.fourthly and importantly india's geographical position is key,it guards the indian ocean.
Now onto japan . japan is a very powerful economy.IT also posseses the most powerful navy in the east.
secondly it can easliy be a very powerful nuclear power.[they have stockpiled plutonium for 10,000 warheads]
4rthly it guards the pacific ocean.

India and japan are both china's gateways to the indian and pacific ocean.

Now the question is is china prepared to make some sacrifices for asia's interest and harmony?
If its prepared to,i don't see any problem with a asian leader china. If it holds asia's interests as its own like usa does with all nato countries.
If u want to be leader u must lead by example .

My thoughts. thank u.

Japan is rather advanced in nuclear technology.

If they start producing nuclear weapons and delivery systems China would start crying foul.
