Japan, Turkey considering joint defense equipment development
November 12, 2013

Japan and Turkey are considering teaming up on a development project involving defense equipment.

The project represents another example of the increasingly close relations between Japan and Turkey under the Abe administration.

Sources said the project being considered would involve a joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and a Turkish company to manufacture engines for tanks to be used by the Turkish army.

"(Joint development of defense equipment) is one issue that will be discussed within the relationship between Japan and Turkey," Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said at a Nov. 12 news conference.

Discussions between the two nations will begin once confirmation is made that the plan would not violate Japan's three principles related to the export of weapons.

Under a 2011 relaxation of those principles, joint development with nations other than the United States became possible. Japan has already reached agreements with Britain and France for the joint development of defense equipment.

An important factor for joint development is the creation of a framework that would prevent the use of the equipment for objectives other than what it was initially meant for and the transfer of that equipment to a third nation.

Onodera indicated that consideration would have to be given to determine if the joint development with Turkey would fall under the exceptions made for the export of weapons.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited Turkey twice over the past six months to meet with counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Those talks have led to an agreement to export nuclear plant technology to Turkey as well as to further deepen dialogue in the national security sector.

1-National MBT Development Project:

HEMA is coorperating with solution partners in order to produce AVDS1790 engine family in its own facilities by using local capabilities. AVDS 1790 Engine family consists 750, 950, 1050, 1200 and 1500 hp air cooled engines which are used in MBTs worldwide.

Probably The Partner is:L-3 Communications Combat Propulsion Systems

2-Transmisyon:

Hema Industry is cooperating with solution partners for producing TN54e and TN1500 transmissions in Turkey. TN54ET transmission is an ideal candidate for the modernization program of M60 MBTs.

Probably The Partner is: http://www.davidbrown.com/

3-Suspension:

Hema Defense Industry is cooperating with solution partners to realize local production of Hydro gas and Hydro strut suspension systems and to put into service of Turkish Armed Forces. Thats good news. It will be waste of funds and time developing our own get technology. Learn to how to do it then upgrade it. It always happended like that in human history. Btw Germans may not to want transfer technology. They may not want loose their market at the end. But i always found this Logic interesting if any country wants to have technology she will have it from other source. So sell it directly win-win.

Thats what im allways saying, the only advanced countrys who would share engine tech with Turkey are Japan and Korea.
These two countrys was allways friendly to us without any prejudice, lets hope for more coorperation in other fields.

Tank - Korea
Engine - Japan
Result - Altay

Maybe we could make that Japan and Korea are not so hostile against eachother.
