Jatiyo Muktijoddha Council has decided to revoke the gallantry title ‘Bir Uttom’ awarded by the state to Ziaur Rahman when the country is set to celebrate golden jubilee of the Liberation War this year. Bir Uttom is the second highest award in Bangladesh for individual gallantry.

The national platform of the Freedom Fighters has also proposed to revoke the gallantry titles awarded to self-acknowledged killers of Bangabandhu -- Shariful Haque Dalim, Nur Chowdhury, Rashed Chowdhury and Mosleh Uddin.

In its 72nd meeting on Tuesday, Jamuka has decided that the above mentioned five people and their families won’t get any of the state facilities given to the Freedom Fighters for their contributions in the Liberation War.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) founder Ziaur Rahman was initially the commander of sector 1 from 10 April 1971 to 15 May 1971. Later, he was made the commander of sector 11 from 26 June 1971 10 October 1971. He also led the Z Force, also known as Tura Brigade, the first military brigade of Bangladesh Forces.

Though the highest leaderships of ruling Bangladesh Awami League have been alleging the involvement of Ziaur Rahman with the killing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he was not made accused in the suit filed for the gruesome killing.

Liberation war affairs ministry sources said the revoking of gallantry titles awarded to Bangabandhu’s four self-acknowledged killers, who have been sentenced to death, was proposed in the Jamuka meeting. Jamuka member Shajahan Khan, MP, said why the gallantry award of Ziaur Rahman will not be revoked if the awards of four self-acknowledged killers of Bangabandhu is revoked? The chair of Jamuka meeting, liberation affairs minister and other members reached in a consensus over the matter.
Currently, the decision has been taken in principle regarding Ziaur Rahman, Khondaker Mostaq and Mahbubul Alam Chashi. Many people’s Nobel prize, doctorate degrees are revoked globally. Maybe, their Freedom Fighter status cannot be revoked, but their gallantry awards will be revoked, they will get the punishment for their crimes
AKM Mozammel Haque, Liberation War Affairs Minister

According to the liberation war affairs ministry website, Shariful Haque is a Bir Uttom, Nur Chowdhury a Bir Bikrom, Rashed Chowdhury and Mosleh Uddin are Bir Protik.

Speaking to Prothom Alo, liberation war affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque on Tuesday said Ziaur Rahman violated the Constitution, the main principles of the Constitution. Despite being a Freedom Fighter he formed cabinet with people who cherished anti-liberation sentiments. He positioned the self-acknowledged killers of Bangabandhu at important posts and helped them leave the country.

In response to a question on why suddenly this decision was taken, the minister said, “The rule is nothing could be done against the people who passed away. That’s why no decision was taken against Ziaur Rahman, Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad and Mahbubul Alam Chashi. Jamuka meeting has also discussed about people like them at length. Awards and facilities of all of them will be revoked. Currently, the decision has been taken in principle regarding Ziaur Rahman, Khondaker Mostaq and Mahbubul Alam Chashi. Many people’s Nobel prize, doctorate degrees are revoked globally. Maybe, their Freedom Fighter status cannot be revoked, but their gallantry awards will be revoked, they will get the punishment for their crimes.”

Two of the Jamuka members, who took part in the meeting on Tuesday, told Prothom Alo that Jamuka member Shahiduzzaman MP proposed to take the opinion of the law ministry before making the decision. But, most of the Freedom Fighters along with injured Freedom Fighter Rashidul Alam said it would take a long time if it is sent to the law ministry. If necessary, the liberation war ministry will talk to the law ministry later and would settle legal complications, if there is any.

The Jamuka meeting also discussed how the names of people who worked against the Liberation War and the people identified as the plotters of Bangabandhu murder are still in the ‘Lal Mukti Barta,’ the book regarded as the most authentic list of Freedom Fighters. Later, it was decided that a committee, led by Shajahan Khan will work to exclude the names of those persons.

The committee would make a list of such controversial people and present that in the next meeting. The committee would also work on whether the Swadhinota Padak (Independence Award) of Ziaur Rahman could be revoked.

Speaking to Prothom Alo on Tuesday, BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said such a decision is a supreme contempt for the Liberation War and the Freedom Fighters. He also termed the decision as political vengeance.

“First thing is, we don’t know anything about this decision of the government. It would be most unfortunate if the government takes any such decision. This would be a complete contempt for the Liberation War and the Freedom Fighters because, even the enemies of Ziaur Rahman acknowledges his contributions in the Liberation War. In that context, such a decision would be supremely defamatory and contempt for the Liberation War and the Freedom Fighters.”

“This cannot be denied that Ziaur Rahman called for Liberation War in the name of Bangabandhu. He started the armed fight first and he rebelled from Kalurghat. Can anyone deny that he was a sector commander and commander of Z Force?” the BNP leader said.

Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain further said it was the Awami League that formed the government after the Liberation War and conferred Ziaur Rahman the gallantry title Bir Uttom, highest for the living Freedom Fighters.

"It would be political vengeance if the government takes any other decision. People won’t accept this decision," he said further.

Regarding the Jamuka decision, Sector Commanders’ Forum secretary general Freedom Fighter Harun Habib said in principle he supports the decision of revoking the gallantry title of Ziaur Rahman, Khondoker Moshtaq and other controversial personalities. It is true that they did fight in the Liberation War but it was them who damaged most the achievements of the Liberation War. They rehabilitated the anti-liberation war people. That’s why they are not eligible to get state gallantry awards, he added.

Yes, down with Bir Uttam Ziaur Rahman. Joy Bangla and Joy Hasina bibi. Ziaur Rahman should not have declared the independence of Bangladesh and should have allowed India to takeover east Pakistan, instead.

So, Zia is a national traitor for not allowing India to accomplish its agenda with BAL assistance.

JOY BAL!! JOY BANGLA!!!

Well now Al Jazeera issue will be suppressed. It's called Tom and Jerry game.:lol::lol:
is this true? this was a plot?
I don't think India would try to annex Bangladesh if India isn't super idiot.

East Pakistan was full of hostile population against India , and still Bangladesh is full of hostile population towards India ; I would say we have more hostile population to India than Pakistan has.

Just our govt can't openly buy enmity with India , at least not yet.

However we shouldn't waste our time and make our air force capable to counter enemy.

Otherwise we will be in serious trouble. I don't know why govt is wasting time on it.

Already Myanmar pushed Rohingyas and India created NRC and CAA.

Ziaur Rahman should not have declared the independence of Bangladesh
He didn't declare independent by himself as he wasn't the authority. You yourself day and night rant about democracy and speak the opposite.

Ziaur Rahman declared independence not by himself, but he did it on behalf of Bangabadhu sheikh Mujibur Rahman who was the authority and rightful prime minister of Pakistan ( not only East Pakistan) .
Terrible descision and precedence..... BAL forgets that the pendulum swings both ways.
Yes man . BAL lost it's common sense and started to believe that they had the divine mandate (through Hefajot e Islami) to rule.

I was around in 71. AT NO POINT EVER EVER anyone in the political or military even intimated that they would remain in Bangladesh one day more than necessary. NO ONE in India thought of or conceived of a scenario where East Pakistan would become a part of India.

These latter day fantasists who talk of India's action as being desirous of subjugating and integrating East Pakistan into the Indian Republic haven't got the faintest idea as to the forced and reluctant decision that the genocide rape and terror that was driving millions weekly to cross over into India.

The idea India wanted East Pakistan, for those who lived through those times, is laughably absurd.
India was left with no option but to act as no other country was willing to stop the killing fields of East Pakistan with millions of men women and children being driven like animals out of the charnel house that East Pakistan had been turned into

Mujibur Rahman who was the authority and rightful prime minister of Pakistan ( not only East Pakistan) .

i dont want to derail the thread. but how can Mujib be the rightful prime minister of Pakistan after his involvement in the Agartala Conspiracy?

if a politician was from north bangladesh and he wanted to split it from south bangladesh, conspired with Myanmar to make his dream a reality, gets caught but charges not proved in court for one reason or another. he wins an election, would you be happy with him becoming prime minister of all of Bangladesh?

Wasn't Agartala conspiracy proven false?

No I wouldn't be happy. But Agartala conspiracy was proven false.
Mujib was never anti Pakistan, if he were , he would have been dead by Pakistan army or would be hanged in court. It's natural for everyone. Some people (BNP) even believe that he didn't declare independence and he actually made a pact with Pakistan army ,so that they can arrest him. His family was safe in house and getting 1500 rupee allowenc while civil war started.

If he declared independence , then it's only after operation searchlight, when he was arrested by army.

But we should not discuss further brother, as a specific Pakistani ( Pakistanforever ) will start spamming with his repeatetive rant .

My advice to BNP is to stay quiet and do nothing about it. It is matter not what illegal awami league is doing. They are desperate to survive. Let them fall and then take revenge. Hisab barbar karar waqt In sha Allah ek din zaroor aaibo. Mumin er ek din, chor er hazar din.

Why is al jazeera always poking its nose in other countries? seriously tiny Qatar needs to be shown its place. When was the last time jazeera discussed the corruption of the al-thani family and their multiple villas in miami???

Tiny Qatar needs to be put in its place.

Disgusting, rivalry aside. He fought for the country, held a major position of sector commander and showed gallantry. This is absolutely disgusting. I’m not even a fan of Zia

make bongobandhu bir uttam or sheikh Hasina... which suits pfft

And yet india didn’t leave until pressured by the US

Forget that. I’m wondering how people who swore oath to constitution of Pakistan have the nerve to think they could rule Bangladesh with impunity. Where’s the morality ?

If anything he didn’t know Bangladesh became a thing until he was released from jail and general yahya asked him to remain together

Problem is they’ll not fall. Not yet. BNP is too weak to respond

Well Saudi did cut them out and they wear importing everything at high cost for a while. If not for the kindness of the Late Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah. He reconciled the relationship between and let them back in the house. 😂
